How does one go about popping motors or turbos? They aren't plastic bags. Seriously, how does a turbo blow? They usually fail gradually; right? I've never heard of one instantly seizing up.

I would think over time a small problem can grow un-noticed and then bam. If it didn't get any/enough oil. I don't really know exactly what happens

if you detonate bad enough, you can go from a brand spankign new motor... to a hole in the piston or what not.... it's not necessarily gradual. Personally, I've blown a motor since turbo'd from a weakened ring land.

Just like anything mechanical, there are tons of things that can cause failure. There are a few that happen more often than not.
1)If, say, your car stalls at a high throttle and high Boost, the turbo continues spinning at high RPM with no oil pressure. BAD.
2)Lack of lubrication in general will cause friction and excessive heart and will damage the turine shaft.
3)An object is induced through the compressor, or expelled from the engine throught the turbine, shredding the wheel.

[QUOTE=C MAX]

blew mine twice, once running a high dry shot ran lean and detonated. then two weeks later i did about 6 to 7 runs and heated up my crankshaft pully causing one of the teeth to break off and jump timing.

I blew the rear head gasket last month. Mostly due to 195,000miles on it and some air distribution problems in my intake along with fuel delivery problems.
I think I've cured those problems and have a fresh top end. Bottom end of the engine has over 200,000 miles now.
Several turbo companys have had failures where compressor wheels come off especialy in the GN world.
