97 SCed Alignment Issue 3.125
OK guys here I go again. Ever since I put on the 3.125 pully I have noticed the belt moving back and forth on the tensoiner pully (about 3mm or so) The belt jumped the trk last saturday and shredded. I have the SC off again (4th time in the past year) and have noticed that there are different width shimms between the charger and the mounting bracket (2 are about 3mm, 1 is about 2mm and 1 is 1 mm). I was wondering, those who have the 3.125, have you had alignment problems? are you using any shims? if so what mm width are they? Should the shims be all the same width? Any help would be most appreicated.

I would try NO shims and see how that looks...get underneath, on top and look at it...take it for a nice easy ride close to home...maybe just idle it for alittle bit
when I added a New dler pulley to my setup it ended up not lineing up correctly to the alternator and was all angled wrong...I siwtched back to the old pully and it wound up being fine
You have to find out what evens everything up and go with it...
It gonna take some trial and error but your gonna have to do it, if keeping the blower is worth it to you

Hey Ian, feeling better? Too bad I didn't see you at the GG meet.
Basevoid, I've got the 3.125" on and I've had my shims on since I started out with the 3.60" back in Oct, 2000. The belt should not even move at all on the tensioner pulley. Somethings flexing probably?
Another thing crossed my mind: Has the 3.125" pulley shifted positions? If its not snug on the spindle it too can move back and forth. That happened to me with my 3.33" pulley when it shifted all the way over to the mounting plate.

OK, got it all back together with no shims, looks good at the tensioner pully, but there is about 1/4inch difference at the idler pully (compared to the tensioner, which is riding about 4 mm from the outside edge). The belt rides about 2mm away from inside edge of idler. My guess is to pull it all apart again and put 3 or 4 spacers at the front side of the charger to pull the belt more to the middle of the idler. Any chance that the pully on the alternater could somehow be misaligned?

Hang on, basevoid...I made that mistake a long time ago by loading all of the shims to one side. You have to keep the 3.125" pulley in a parallel plane to the other pulleys. Spread the shims evenly around all of the major posts. I have one shim on posts #4, 8 and 12 I believe.

i may be wrong but it doesnt sound like alignment issues. if the belt is wiggling back and forth its loose. what kind of pulleys do you have. i had some serious aligment issues but solved it by changing the tensioner pulley to a wider metal lexus pulley without rails, trouble free ever since.

Here's some pics I took when I still had the 3.33".
Notice the shift of the 3.33"? The right hand pic is what the pulley position should be at.

Here's how bad it had shifted over. It was rubbing against the #5 bolt

Well, i'm not using any washers on the inside of the idler pully. So, I pulled off the sc again and put some washers on. I put some thicker ones on holes 11,12,13 and graudually dropped down to a very skinny washer on hole 4. The belt is now running steady, close to the outside edge of the tensioner and right in the middle of the idler. The alignment seems to be holding under boosted runs and looks good. I know it makes sense to use all the same washer thickness but this way has seemed to work.
