Kenne Bell Boost-A-Spark

So as some of us bosted guys know the spark system cant handle above 400whp too well. I get a studdering feeling above 16psi in the upper RPMs, You can gap the plugs to .025, but you loose drive ability. John at J&S recomended the KB Boost-A-Spark to us some time back, I dont know if anyone else hooked it up yet, but I have. Its been raining here for a few days so I have not been able to road test it. It does however increase the voltage to the primary side of the coils and the coils dont blow up. At idle the coils were seeing 13v, I switched on the BAS and at zero gain it pushed 15.2v, at ten gain 16.3v, at twenty gain 17.2v. I had not run the car in a week or so, so the battery was low and needed a charge, I run a UDP so the alternator is week at idle. at the 17.2v setting I could hear the strain on the charging system, the idle speed dropped as the load on the alternator increased as the BAS pulled amperage from the rest of the electrical system to produce the higher voltage. I hope my GXE alternator can hang when im at full load with open nitrous solinoids, they draw some current.

Oh by the way be sure to use ARP lube, not 30wt oil, when you torque down the mains, you might strip one like i did , block is at the machine shop for a hopefull helicoil repair FOK!

Mardi, there may be another option soon!

There is a maxima owner that told me that in japan they have Splitfire coil packs for the cefiro. The cool thing is he is trying to get his dad, who is in japan right now, to try and send some over here.

I'd imagine BAS to be cheaper than a set of JDM coils but maybe I'm wrong?

Anyways good info as always Matt, I have been considering the unit myself, after some other more essential changes.

SYCERFIRO have those splitfire coil packs for awhile. I first saw them about 3 years ago. I think I ran across them from some magazine.

if the OE packs are what about $60ea, the splitfires must be 80-100ea $480 to $600. The BAS is $180. Its clearingup here...

Ive seen MSD for DIS systems, they made them for the 300zx.
Wouldnt one of these kits be adaptable to the max?

The BAS is a great setup... I can't wait to hear how it works for you. Had I kept the maxima, that was my next move so I could run higher boost without breakup. Even .022 gap was breaking up for me when I cranked the boost.

If I remember correctly, double the voltage = 4x spark?

Are you upping the voltage to just the coils , or the whole system? On a friend's TT 6L camaroSS it's setup to boost the whole system (gets more fuel output as well) - it's funny to watch his lights get bright when it's activated.

Sorry to hear about the block. Can't wait to see what you do this season.

The MSD stuff will fry the coils on our set up, we have the transistors built into the coils.

I actually got it used for $75 shipped, but had to buy a hobbs switch for $30 from NAPA, still a great deal!

Just to the coils, but thats an interesting idea.

I drove it today at 18.5psi and it ran great, I had it cranked up to twenty gain and no problems. The funny thing was at the zero gain setting it was fine too. Perhaps 15v is stronger that what they were getting before. I did not run the Alch/WI with it yet, I to scavange a few parts for the BAS hobbs switcth, 1/8NPT to vacum line fittings are tough to find.

Look under your hood and report back if you see any spark plug wires

Buhaha. Oldie but a goodie.

It's interesting to read that boosting the primary voltage boosts the secondary voltage.

John@J&S or matt was talking about thast previously... maybe even using another battery or thicker wire

theres no sparkplug wires, but that mean splice in a thicker gauge wire?
