Whoa with a quaife in there, if you are running any more than 10psi, or if you bang shifts really hard, personally I'd get the thing magnafluxed and if everything looks good, cryod and shotpeened, deburred and detailed. You don't want to break a gear and have the fragments destroy your $1300, irreplacable Quaife differential (they don't make them anymore as I'm sure you know.)

dam 3rd gear! thats the funest gear to get in. IV been running 10psi on my 93vlsd tranny for a while now with no problems so far. but im in the process of some thing right now that should put me close to 400whp if i turn up the boost that far. but i was planning on running about 18-20psi for the track so ill get back to you all when the tranny or motor goes.im thinking with as rich as I will have it running that the tranny will get it.

If it's the same for the 3rd gen as it is for the 4th gen and you end up making that kind of power I'd say don't expect it to last forever and plan accordingly.

If you are asking if it is the input or output gear, it is technically both since if one shredded then it would take the other with it. Which one goes first is very hard to say since it would happen almost simultaneously.

If I still have my broken 3rd gears and broken 4th gears around the shop I will take a look at them and tell which broke first, but like spig said, once one goes, the other goes and they just annihilate eachother. If you know what to look for though, and if it's fatigue cycling (which it has been in my case) there are ways to tell which teeth let go first, you can tell by the fracture patterns. I'll take a look for them when I get a chance.

The 5-speeds have always sucked. It just took a retardedly long time for Nissan to realize that they did in fact suck.

The newer 6-speeds are way beefier.

I blew 4th gear in it. The gears are just to small. The mods we do at TRE increase the strength incrementally but there is a limit to how much you can put through it and that limit is ultimately dictated by the size of the gear and strength of the steel and even with modification these gears can't hold up to 400lb-ft forever. I am working on another solution and I'll post about it when I have more info, just waiting on some parts right now.

Well they used those crappy four cylinder internals from 1985 to 2001. That's pretty damn ridiculous and called for something dumb like that...
