Are you just running the dump side open or is it recirculating through the down pipe?

What are the advantages/disadvantages to having this setup? It seems to be less work. But, wouldn't the exhaust be louder? How do you like it?

Not really sure there is much of an advantage to having it dump to atmosphere. Obviously, there is less exhaust gas in the piping which lets things flow better but I am not sure how much of a difference it makes

Yes, it is loud. Once my wastegate opens the car screams like a freight train. I used to not like it but it has kind grown on me.

Haha nice! I'm sure it's almost as loud as when I open my exhaust cutout just after my Ypipe.

So, the wastegate only opens when you go WOT? I would imagine that you can drive normal and have a pretty quiet car around town if you had a stock muffler. But once you get more exhaust flowing through the turbo, the wastegate will open and you'll be loud.

I might just do this setup at first. I just know it's a little less work in the welding department. If I don't like it, then I can simply remove the piping and weld a way to recirculate the exhaust.

It only opens when I hit full boost per my wastegate spring, that is how it works. I have ran an open down pipe and it is not even close to that loud. It kinda has a freight train sound to it when it opens.

My car is very quiet just driving around normal or even just getting into boost a little bit. I have a greddy sp cat-back, not stock and it is still quiet.

It would not take much for me to route the dump into the down pipe. The dump runs parrallel to the down pipe.

That's pretty cool. Is there any reason why 99% of the custom turbo setups I've seen all have the wastegated exhaust recirculate? Is it just because of exhaust noise? Thanks for the help Mike.

You are going to get hurt...

Another reason they might not go with a dump is that there might not be room to run the dump so that it doesn't pour hot exhaust gas all over things that like to melt. We maximas have it pretty easy once the battery is removed there is a ton of room. Most cars don't have this luxury.

Personally I don't like my open wastegate, it makes my eardrum rattle when I have my driver's side window down and I get on it. The open downpipe I have is loud, but the open dump is a whole new level of noise and I don't like it. Personally I'm a ricer and I'd rather have a quiet exhaust and hear that turbo spooling up like a jet engine which isn't possible with an open dump.

Well noise is of course a factor, but you overlook the fact you arent allowed to vent exhaust into the atmosphere without muffling and cleaning it (via catalytic converter). While this wouldnt hurt your emissions test (infact may help you by preventing 100% of the exhaust from coming out the tail pipe) but if your state has inspections, you would never pass.
