Another turbo car bites the dust!
I got hosed! Yesterday I hear a funny sound comming from the timing chain end of the block and there are small aluminium shavings every where. Come to find out the timing ring on the back side of my RVM under drive pully had come loose and was milling out the lower oil pan. Last night while I was trying to limp the POS home the timing ring cut through a oil jacket, or I assume thats what happened, its tight in there. She starts to cough and sputter as I'm going across the dam and I leave a trail of oil a mile long. It will be a few days before I get to tear it apart to see what happened, every boy pray for the best.
Any one got a spare upper pan laying around?

That sucks. I may have one if I can get some help getting Mike's engine home today.
I thought a lot of people had problems with the RVM pulley.
A side note, I just picked up an underdrive pulley that I do not need. I was going to do some S/C testing with it, but if you need it, I'll sell it to you.

I'l take you up on that offer turbo! As soon as I pull the pully off, I'll hit you up. Hopefully none of the timing was off, when I was in boost. She is sputtering a lot, there is a chance I could have burned another valve. Right now I'm too disscusted to work on it, that and midterms coming up.
Thanks for the offers fellas.

have you guys ever heard of a rod snaping? I'm debating on weither or not to change out the rods or just the pistons. Import performance parts has a rebuild kit with pistons but no rods. The goal was only 400 and I know that the fac rods can take the stress, but if I have to rebuild may as well do it to the extreme.
Never heard of breaking a rod on a VQ. The main failure points from power on the VQ that I've seen have been headgasket first and foremost, also ring lands and main bearings (main bearings on VQ35).
From RPM (overreving) I've heard of rod bolts stretching and of valve/piston contact.

Well I was right and I was wrong! Got some time to pull the pully off and low and behold 2 screws that hold on the timing ring on the back of the under drive pully had backd out. Rather than cutting a hole in the lower oil pan, I milled out the timing chain cover, which would explain the coughing and sputtering when she died. luckally I just so happen to have a spare in the attic. Time was short so I didn't get a chance to pull the chain cover, I'm shooting for monday on that one.
sounds like you (sorta) dodged a bullet! good luck getting it fixed!
would probably be a real good idea to pull the oil pan and pickup tube and make sure everything is flushed out.. good chance you got some aluminum shavings in there.
