(4th Gen) - Z32 MAF on charged side, 370cc, JWT ECU & S/C - how to make it work

So I've been asked to do a writeup on how to make the Z32 MAF setup work with the JWT ECU + 370cc Injectors while S/C'ed on the charged side.

Symptoms:
With the Z32 MAF on the charged side and stock Stillen piping the car idles horribly, bucks hard when cold, and is generally undrivable.

Solution:
The Stock Stillen piping doesn't work well with this setup. After spending a year trying to figure out if it was compressor surge, vacuum leak, etc, etc it turned out the reason (And solution) is quite simple.

I needed 3" Piping.

The reason is not compressor surge or any performance boost with 3" piping. The reason is simply that with the flange on the stock Stillen piping facing the way it faces, it causes the MAF harness to face up or down.

It must face towards the battery - like this:

As soon as I had the 3" piping in originally (With the harness facing up) - it still idled and ran horribly especially when cold.

Turned the MAf 90 degrees - and problem solved.

Car idles a little wonky for 90 seconds on cold days - and has some dead spots at low RPM when cold - but it is drivable. As soon as it warms up even a little - it idles BETTER than it did with the A32 MAF and runs perfectly.

Sticky this bish!

Update.....after making it a tiny bit more straight - it doesn't idle loopy ever now.....even when >40 degrees out.

A/F at 7000RPM is 12.1:1

I got my wiring facing downward and I do not have any problems with it car idles fine. But in any case cant wait to go to 3 inch piping.

You got lucky I guess.

Matty and I had the same problem with the same fix. Even now if I twist the MAF 90 degrees it still does it.

Then again, mine was facing up, not down....

certain this isnt a defetive MAF? I would think its a bit strange that the MAF would react in sucha manner due to orientation of the unit... Hmm.. interesting.. I have to keep this in mind when i get the MAF.

P.S. is the ~.04v wire the black or the brown.. or both?

Yes - I did the same thing on 2 MAFs from a buddy's 300z - which ran great.
All of the MAFs had to have this rotation to work.

It appears to not be the same for others - and I did have custom 3" piping - so maybe it was an airflow turbulence issue...?

Z32 MAF can handle more airflow then a stock A32 unit. You can easily max out an A32 MAF going under boost. I believe 300HP for the A32 and 450HP With the Z32...I Think.

Sounds like if you changed the MAF twice that you may have it wired incorrectly? Has it worked before? What you described is a BAD MAF like the car is running in safe mode.

Yea I got the wiring digram for the z. on the 2k max it has 4 wires white, red, black, red&green. Red is not used only w/b/r&g . I think I might have to run a wire from the ecu pin 42 I think right to the maf I hope not that is so annoying I just made a wiring harness to fit the 2k max and I don't think I'll do it ever LOL .no this is my first time trying it that's y I'm lost

The reason you are lost is because you are trying to use a Z32 maf in a 5th gen. Read the title of the thread, this is for 4th gens. I dont know anyone that has ever used the Z32 maf in a 5th gen, but this is because we dont need to.

5th gens have the advantage of being able to unbolt the maf sensor from the actual housing and into a bigger housing. Search "land rover MAF housing"

If your maf is on the charged side, i highly recomend this. If it is on the uncharged side like the original 5th gen SC kit, it is not really needed.

Duh I no it's 4gen I can c the title just wanted c I anyone had any idea how to help it's stupid comments like that I can't do somthing that makes me do it . They told me I couldn't wire a 4gen ecu to a 5gen I'll have to change all the harness to make a jwt ecu work on my 5gen and guess what just to prove them wrong I made one from top to bottom I'll have pics tomorrow but thank for your kind words I'll make the maf work trust me just being lazy

This maybe be a little o.t from the original post. But what else is necessary to tune the z32 maf. Is a wideband and safc enough . Or is a jwt ecu or emanage a must have .

local junk yard. people in the FS section want like 80+.

I picked up one in a local NY junk yard for 50$. It came with maf,harness/pin,pigtail, rubber gromet. I got lucky. If you look around, you can find.

The emanage and safc/vafc intercept the maf wire so any of these are basically a maf hack, they manipulate the maf signal going to the ecu. Any of these can be used. You should have a wideband to see what the adjustments you make do.

Thanks, does it matter what year 300Z I get Z32 for? Im guessing I need the MAF from a turbo charged 300Z ?

Why worry. Get the MAF the TT 300z uses. That's what I did.

Yeah, I did a little more research and found out that the J30 uses the exact same maf. I found one for a 93 J30 for 75 bucks with the harness from a local junkyard. I have been searching online and on ebay.. I have seen the maf for 100 and up. Seems like my local price beats them all so far.
