01 Turbo project information Collection

Hey,

I seen a lot of talk on here about people turboing 4th gens but not to much 5th gen.

I not sure if this is to much to ask for out of our cars. This is my idea.

400+ to the wheel hp. (goal) 11 seconds or faster. 1/4 mile.

Parts Needed:

1. What size turbo would I need?
what about AR ratios I was researching and didnt understand much of what AR ment and what sizes of turbo needed.

2. BOV
Is there any certain size or type thats better than one or another.

3. Turbo Timer.
(Greddy) Do they basically do the same?

4. Emanage or Emanage Ultimate?

5. 370 Injectors or larger
(Who makes them)

6. Fuel pressure regulator
(Brands)

7. 255 Walbaro Fuel Pump

8. Intercooler
(What brands or Sizes are better than others)

9. 3" exhaust piping and Muffler
(Installed)

Anything else to the list? In hawai people dont know much about turbo a max so thats why I am asking you guys, I want to be one of the first.

Gotta love reading the stickies before asking...

Most of your questions are answered there

And dont worry much about that being more "taylored" to the 4th gens, 5th gens are not so different when it comes to turbo'ing.

I was looking at the turbo AR calculator and trying to figure out what turbo is good for me and the link seems to be dead, its a sub link off of the link above.

Is lower the AR the faster the turbo spools?

Yes, smaller ARs will have faster spool but the tradeoff is topend will suffer, vice versa.

what would be a good number to look for when getting AR that would spool up quick but not really hurt the top end.

What size of turbo would be good? is there such thing as too big or Too small?

Yes, there is. Many people use some form of t3/t4 hybrid, while others uses T4's. T3's are generally too small for our motor. With the AR, I would go some where around a .6xx to a .7xx exhaust side for a balance of power. When coming to selecting a turbo, do a search and read the stickies, I know when I was tryng to figure what turbo I wanted, I made a thread with some good info/feedback (linky below). Also, in the stickies theres a specific post regarding this subject.

t3/t4 hybrid = t3 exhaust side and t4 compressor for better spool on smaller motors

t4 has a bigger exhaust side which spools slower but the 3.5 should have no problem with it

Get the book Maximum Boost by Corky Bell, Also just google, alot of helpful info will pop up. It's better to research for yourself and the stickies have alot of info too. Also check the dyno thread, it reveals alot of what people are running to get an idea of hp goals with certain items like inj cc's exhaust diameter, etc.

The "T4" is just the housing. There are lots of different internal variations that control how it will flow. But yes, in general a T4 in ball bearing form is going to do fine with correctly sized internals.

I personally prefer the Garrett turbos. Go with a GT30 or 35. Those also have verious internals. Ball bearing, water cooled and oil lubed head units. Top a the line.

In my opinion, yes it is unless it is a race application and you don't mind waiting until 4000-4500 RPMs for your boost to come up.

I am going with a 0.63 A/R T3, and I am expecting my boost setpoint to arrive around 3000-3500 RPMs from a 4th gear roll (hopefully closer to 3k), which should be lots of fun on the street.

For comparison, I use a T4 0.68 A/R p-trim with my T66 on my 5.0L Mustang and it achieves 8 PSI around 2800 RPMs (this turbine housing is on the small side for this setup, but works great for the street)

I would go with a GT3076R with a .82ar. Its a tad smaller than the GT35R but I think its better for the 1/4 mile.

My GT35R/T4 (.68ar) is decent but it does take a little longer to spool (full boost at 4kish). Mines a better hwy runner IMO.

Fixed. I have the GT35R/T4 with a .68ar. Its a great turbo but i think mine is more of for topend/hwy racing. The one you posted is a standard GT35R which is a t3 exhuast housing.

There's .62 but no .68, what kind of whp, where you dyno?

Im looking to get close to 400 at high boost and around 290-300 daily driven at low boost if thats possible.

I'm running the same turbo as Nigel from PFI, theres a dyno in the stickies. I dynoed mine at 350whp on 7.5psi but it was a no name dyno which I dunno how accurate it is (tq wise). With a DEK, I dont see a problem getting to 400whp on 12-14psi.
