best power gain for FI- VI or cat-back?

I ASSUME the 00vi would provide FAR more in terms of mid and low-end power gain than adding on an SP2/WS/Cattman catback. Just want to confirm it.

Actually, as of right now I have yet to install a vortech sitting in my living room. I have a small hole in my exhaust (after the cat) and am wondering whether to:

Go 00vi and get the exhaust patched pending more $$ for cat-back (I am kinda low on needed backpressure right now and can actually FEEL it, so SOMETHING needs to be done about the exhaust, just a question of what)

Go cat-back and wait on the 00vi pending more $$ (sound familiar?)

I'm still trying to find out what the best option for the money is on a budget of about $700 for a quality cat-back with great sound and performance on FI...

You'll find this funny: after I am finished with this preliminary part (bolting on blower and option 1/2, I am going to do a 1/4 mile with my friend- he drives a stock 350z 6-speed. Yes, I will lose- the point is not to lose by TOO much I just want to improve my chances of not losing by 5-6 car lengths without (turboing/buying a new car/anything else the flamers will undoubtedly think up- why race a 350z in a 99 Max 4AT Cali-spec, even if it is supercharged??/etc)

Budget Bpipe w/ resonator = 250shipped
Dynomax Superturbo 17748 - 50dolla
Exhaust shop charges = 30-50dolla
Test pipe off ebay = 30 dolla.

Do you already have a ypipe? I would replace your front cali spec header with an SSAutochrome one.

I would get the exhaust done and VI later.

get the vi and patch the exhaust till you have $$ to get a new one.The vi will give you far far greater gains then an exhaust.

If you're trying to boost with a leaking stock exhaust, REPLACE THAT EXHAUST.

How about gat the VI and buy a open cutout for $30 so you can kill 2 birds with one stone? You can always remove the cutout later when you do a full catback...

eh i boosted on the stock exhaust (minus aftermarket y-pipe) and my car does just fine. granted opening up the exhaust would have yielded huge gains i am sure, i just cant put up with a loud exhaust.

Dynomax Super turbo or 5th gen muffler or stock muffler. Bpipe is where the power is at.

I wouldnt boost with the stock exhaust.
If your going to invest some cash, piece together a decent exhaust, especially since yours is already leaking. The electric cutout with a decent b pipe and muffler would be ideal for boosted runs or just the daily drive.
I dont see what the rush is to make more power in the top end if the exhaust isnt flowing decently to begin with.

I assume the cutouts restrict and unrestrict exhaust flow based on circumstances (i.e., boost or no boost). Who installs these, what parts are needed, and how much would it cost?

There are various different types of cutout. Manual, Electrical and vacuum types. The cheapest being manual can be bought for about $30+ from summit racing. You can take it to an exhaust shop and have it put in for around the same price. Both electrical and vacuum activiated are more exprensive and a little hard to install depending on the design. For you setup I would go with a manual.

Would anyone highly recommend a 3" system (Warpspeed sells one) over just getting a 2.5" cat-back? Bear in mind that I have a stock y (not leaking) right now....

How much more would an electric cutout cost, and where would I get the hardware? I assume it would be safe to run on my N/A car in the weeks before I install the Vortech... I also assume your average muffler shop or chain can't really do an electrical cut-out....

I wouldn't get unless you plan to run 12-15+psi of boost.

here is a site on the electric cutout. Im actually in the process of piecing one together.

You will need the cutout and a straight pipe to mount it to.
A 3" exhaust would be less of a headache but will be loud for day to day driving, plus it will cost much more then going with the cutout.

I wouldn't bother with the VI until you take care of the basics first..and that really should be the exhaust. 3 inch exhaust would be ideal, and my new car has a 3 inch and really it's not that loud at all. It's perfectly liveable.

Ahhhh, well that would explain why its not that loud. Unless your boosted there is no real need for the 3" exhaust.
