Turbo Specialties VQ30 turbo kit review

I'm running a internal WG on my setup also, I am trying to keep it as "stealth" as possible with no traces of anything but a few pipes here n there.
Friend has a welding shop and can hook me up with CRAZY fabrication skills as far as welding goes. Surgical welds on my IC pipes FTW.
Too bad winter is almost here, I'm itchn to see what this setup of mine can push.

I would use and internal. They are just as adjustable as external. and just as reliable. ALso if doing a custom job leaves for less pipe work also. If you look docs setup is an internal wastegate. My old dsm runnig 22psi was internal. Yea extenal looks cool but i would much rather have an internal.
I tend to disagree. I don't trust internal gates at all. I've seen too many have trouble holding there desired boost. I'd never run an internal gate personally - I feel external gates are functionally superior in every way. I do agree that it makes for easier and cheaper piping though.

If you check out the 350Z community, those guys have all kinds of problems with internal gates on the kits they run. My buddy had problems on his TT 350z with the gates on his Garrett GT2560Rs even at like 12psi... I don't know man, I just don't trust em. I know there are a million guys out there running them but I don't like them.

This is the turbo they're talking about in the email I have below: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob..._700382_20.htm
It may work the best for our application.
HI AGAIN,
THANKS FOR GETTING BACK TO ME.
THE GT 35 YOU LOOKED AT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO ADAPT, IT DOES NOT HAVE AN INTERNAL WASTE GATE, THE INLET IS DIFFRENT, THE FLANGE TO MANIFOLD IS T-3 STYLE AND THE OUTLET FROM THE TURBINE IS WHAT IS CALLED V GROVE.
HOWEVER THE GT 3071R (700382-20) IS COMPATIABLE WITH OUR KIT. I WOULD HAVE TO ORDER AND I DON'T KNOW WHEN I WOULD GET IT.
FOR PRICING GIVE US A CALL OR E MAIL YOU # AND WE WILL CALL YOU. THERE ARE OPTIONS AND DIFFRENT PRICES FOR UPGRADE TURBOS.

440cc injectors, HKS SSQBOV (got it for free, new so I can't complain) Spearco Bar & Plate IC, turbo specialties manifold and motor mount, 3" V-band turbo back.... 300ZX FP (I do not like Walbro) 300ZX MAF, Emanage Ultimate, PLX M300 wideband....
If I max this baby out, I'm going to step up to a GT3076R in its largest iteration. This is my "starter" turbo that is responsive. I am not done installing all the junk yet- winter is almost here which means no more 5th gen.
I'm thinking of boosting the 3rd gen too....
I've owned way too many SE-Rs in my past, boost can get quite addictive. Especially since I been runing 53J DETs since 1997

Walbros are not consistant and I seen a few have residual pressure check valves fail on them. Hard starts are very common on them.
According to RC Engineering 300ZX pump puts out 241LPH, 43psi @ 13.5V. Its pretty much a 255lph pump at 14V. Its very reliable- but kinda loud. I had one in my B13 SE-R 10 years ago, and it sounded like I had a jet engine in the trunk ! OEM > Walbro.

I wonder if a used or new 300z or possibly a Q45 pump would work. Anybody know the pressures and fitment issues that may be of issue?
#261
Just get a walbro, there is no need to spend triple the money
Every major engine build up from supra's to civic's all use walbro's. There is nothing wrong with them.
#262
Q45 pump is just as expensive as the Z one, I think it flows alot more. On a Q45 there is a fuel pump control module that varies the output of the pump.
G50 is the pump you would want to use, later models use a smaller pump.
I just do not trust Walbros.

Hello,
My name is Fawad Rafiq. Question for the Doc2278. Did you ever finish that turbo project you started. I just recently joined Maxima.org, I was going to but the same exact kit until I read this Thread. Can you please reply becuz I'm like a deer in headlights. I also called Doug Adams at turbo specialties. He said he can give me the kit for $1900.00. Would the piping and the rest of the parts would work if I were to go the GT3076r or would it not. Please if anybody can help me or give me suggestions of what you think. I'm kinda lost.

So let me ask you this, rest of the kit without that t28 turbo is fine as long as you get Gt3071R which one of my freind recommended. I guess so get the adapter flange which will adatp to the Gt3071R. Do you have to upgrade any of the fuel components or anything in that nature. In other words this kit still would be 100% complete, just get the different turbo I guess. There are not any fitment issues are there ?

this kit comes with a set of auxiliary injectors that attach in front of the throttle body. There is an injector phase computer to prevent knock. Welcome to boost if you buy the kit. To answer your question Yes, Im going bigger turbo (just got sponsored by Turbospecialties). I will put on a photo How to (if you will) On how to upgrade the kit. I will do my best to give you a step by step approach. Welcome Fawad to the org, I look forward to assisting you in your venture with this kit.

This kit has a T2 flange on the "manifold" and GT3071R is THE largest T2 turbo you can buy. Its more like a rather large T3 turbo, its just a smaller frame/smaller flanged turbo.
Internally wastegated so there is less work to be done. If you do buy the turbo, make sure you get the right kind you need, the 4" inlet one supposed to help with compressor surge.
Also I highly recomend you upgrade the injectors, this "piggyback" fuel control unit is kind of ghetto. I'm affraid that with fuel being sprayed infront of the TB some of the cylinders will get more fuel than others. I would want all 6 cylinders to get exactly the same amount of fuel. If they don't.... you will be doing a engine on your car soon.
It might not be a big "issue" at lower power output- bellow 300WHP, but once you are into the 400+ WHP you will DEFF want to ditch the stock injectors for larger units. There are quite a few diff choices for injectors- 5th/5.5 gen guys can use anything 350Z uses, and 4th gen guys can use 95-96 300ZX TT injectors, 94-96 Q45 injectors, or any SR20DET injector- those are all 370cc. There are many choices available to us.
I dunno if you ever heard of AMS, they do some big # EVOs.... friend of mine does their advertising and PR work. I won't stop till my Max wins Ultimate Street Car Challenge by SCC :P

Ditto what Blackbird said on the pre TB injectors.
You can definitely get uneven distribution that way, which can lead to a large AFR spread between your cylinders if you are trying to supply too much fuel through them. Where that threshold is is anyone's guess.
However, your WB02 won't tell you that you have this problem. It will be either you reading your plugs (if you are lucky) or from picking up piston pieces.
Good luck.

Hey Doc,
This is newbee again (Fawad). I really appreciate this Doc. Now I can finally get a turbo after a long time. Just didn't want to throw my money away. I'll be looking forward for those instructions and how to's. I mean I can do the work myself just need some guidance. By the way I had GT3071R in my mind. Do you think that be good or would I have to modify whole lot of fuel system or what not.
Thanks

i was under the impression if you got a turbo any larger than a t2 for instance a t3/t4 the IC piping at 2 inches would insuffcient and larger piping would be needed. But i guess with the GT3071R you can just get the adapter flange to make it work.
#278
that is might thought as well but i was wondering if larger piping would fit....any clearance issues using 2.5in piping?

Hello,
Hey Doc this is the newbie again, sorry to bother you. I was wondering about the kit so is it okay to buy the kit without the turbo or not. Everything else works out or not like piping and all that other stuff. I'm still looking forward to your finished project can't wait.
