V2 whine when boosting
V2 whine when boosting
I am running a V2 set up with a 3.125 pulley. The past few times I have driven my car I am getting a whine when boosting my car, and its getting louder. Under light acceleration it starts out more as a wo..wooo...wooo, kinda a wobbly whine. And under heavier acceleration/boost it gets louder and less choppy. I looked under the hood and did not notice anything wrong. The belt was still on all of the pullys and had tension. I noticed a faint melting plastic rubber smell. I have not done any work on my car recently. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? It's getting progressively worse, and it seems to be getting worse quickly.
When I rev the car in neutral it does not whine/make any noise, and when it is in gear and under no/light load it does not make any noise (i.e. driving down the interstate at a steady 60 mph). Ideas?

My electric boost gague is not working currently, I need to put in my mechanical gauge. When ever my car looses battery power the electric gague decides not to work for a while, but then it will start working again until I loose battery power again.
The noise sounds like a noise that the three stooges make (if you have ever seen that show). Like woo...woop...woop...., kinda sounds like something out of round rolling. Don't know if that make since or not.
If I have a leak it is not noticible. I have an oil leak either at the upper oil pan or timing chain cover, but I am not positive which one.

Can you post an audio clip? I'm having a hard time imagining the sound. I think I know what you mean, but want to be sure before I say anything.
As far as the slight melting rubbing smell, have you checked the idler pulley? It isn't getting cone shaped, is it? Or a groove worn in it? How's your belt tension? All dialed in?

I have not checked my idler pulley. I will check the belt tension, but just a simple pushing on the belt the other night it seemed fine.
Yeah, I am five speed. I changed my wheels over the weekend and also took out my splash guard on that side since it looked like I could have possibly touched my tire. The whine is still there. I can still smell a melting plastic smell when I come to a stop. The smell if faint but it is there. My belt could be a little tighter but I have just moved and I do not have any metric wrenches at my house yet so I can not loosen the nut on the tensioner. Could a loose belt cause all of this noise? It has been loose before but never caused this much noise. I checked my pullies and none of them appeared to be out of round. I have a metal idler pulley so I do not have to worry about that one melting. Any more ideas? I am droping the car off at the body shop today so I will not be able to work on the car for a few days...but I could use some fresh ideas.
I still have this problem and its getting worse. It when I accelerate even before I hit boost the car howls...the harder I accelerate the louder it gets. I will try my best to get a video but does anyone have any ideas. My car is still making decent power it was making this noise while I was drag racing at MAXUS. I was still trapping ~108 when the car was hot on a 3.125 pulley. What would cause a howling under acceleration.
Possibly. It does not sound anything like the marbles in a can that most people describe when they need a rebuild. But I guess it's always an option.
No I am not sure, but it would be the loudest wheel bearing ever.

Faint plastic smell? There's one small pulley that's made of plastic next to the tensioner pulley. Make sure that the nut hasn't loosened or seized. I think its loose. Check the underside of the belt grooves to see if its rubbed smooth or the belt edge if there's rubbing on the side.
Definitely not the marbles-in-a-can noise as that is way different than a woo-wooo noise.
