Lets talk exhaust

So I hate drone. Can't stand it, makes the car sound like a ricer.

I currently have a RMT setup with a flowmaster strait through muffler (maybe magnaflow?). I also have a budget ypipe with the stock cat. It drones from 1300-2300 rpm's I am ALWAYS at that range in the city so I am getting very tired of the noise.

I want ZERO, i mean ZERO drone. I do not want to sacrifice too much power for that. From my research in the past, an equal length exhaust (equal length ypipe/headers for us) will result in no drone but I was never able to confirm. Can you guys?

If I can get by w/o buying the $800+ Cattman headers, that would be nice. Any good, high flowing mufflers you guys know of? It would have to be a 3" inlet. I will look into having an equal length ypipe made if anyone can confirm my theory posted earlier. I need to wrap my 2.5" bpipe but that will not do much for the noise.

My friend, my advice is going with what I used to have/still have. 3" in/out dynomax superturbo muffler, with a 24" resonator on the B pipe, and leave the normal ypipe, eddy had equal length ypipe/headers and that **** was still loud/drone although he denies it lol. With my setup my car had ZERO drone. Magnaflow 24" resonators are good thats the first one I had but failed internally, then i got some nonnamebrand but same size, was still as quiet, then the dynomax muffler.

Right now I dont have a resonator at all, no cat, nothing, just the turbo and muffler, and still dont get too much drone, i do but not as bad as urs id bet you. Ofcourse when ever you want to reduce sound you are restricting airflow as well, but you cant have everything u kno. The trick for my turbo to spool up very very fast is not having anything (no resonators, or cars) before the turbo and everything wrapped, the resonator did affect spool up, but I was like 2 years without knowing that till i took it off, its not that big of a deal specially since your 5sp, so throw in a 24" or 26" straight thru res, and dynomax. you'll be happy.

running a 24" magnaflow resonator , 3inch ypipe, no cat and no muffler and its loud but deep loud. I had the same setup but a dynomax super turbo muffler and it was quite and no drone at all...

ditch the flowmaster, have it on my car now and it's too loud had to add a resonator and it's still alittle loud but I am hoping the turbo will take care of that

I also had flowmasters on my truck when I had about 300hp, cats and a 2.5inch exhaust it was fine. swapped the motor, removed the cats and when to 3inch and it sounded like open headers. all I did it remove the mufflers and installed a pair of dynomax's and trouble solved

I have the 3" dynomax with a summitracing 24" resonator. I heard having a large resonator would help with the noise so I went with that size. Not loud at all.

I have the same issue. I originally built a 3" turbo back exhaust with no resonator. The raspy top end got on my nerves so I installed this 3"x18" Headman glass pack as a resonator ($36.95 from summit).

Magically all high frequency noise was gone. The car actually gets quieter at higher RPM. With that noise gone the low end drone is now more noticeable. I don't want to install a chambered muffler and slow down the spool so I'm thinking about replacing cheap fart can with something name brand. Do you have any sound clips? I Made one from inside and outside the car to show my local maxima club.
Outside clip:

From in the cabin:
http://s663.photobucket.com/albums/u...0.flv&newest=1
I would love to eliminate the drone.

I had a Cattman 3" on my turbo 5th gen with no resonator and loved it. There was not a lot of drone and it sounded so good. I do not have any sound clips. Hopefully I can get everything put back together in the next few weeks and get some sound clips.

Yea my budget Bpipe has a 16-18" Magnaflow resonator on it already. Since there was oil in my muffler from bad turbo's could that have made the muffler bad? I feel the SuperTurbo muffler will be too restrictive.

As far as a glasspack, you do not want a louvered core one because they rob power. I should have room to add another resonator but I dont know if I should or change the muffler first.

I will see if Cattman can sell me a 3" muffler. Many people say those are quiet.

Also anyone used these?

Apex'i WS and WS2 were quiet mufflers back in the day, I haven't seen one in years though so I'm not sure if they sound the same now.

The Apex'i is a beautiful piece with a lot of room for packing, but I will most likely settle for something less expensive.
As far as a leaking turbo ruining your muffler, idk, but my exhaust seemed like it got quieter after my old turbo leaked oil in there. The inside of the whole exhaust became coated with carbon which was less reflective of sound than the bare metal.

I would like to get the WS2 but I cannot find the dimensions of the muffler. I don't see an Apexi email addy either so I will try to call them sometime this week and see what they say.

I've got a WS muffler but my exhaust is not quiet at the moment. On my cali spec max I have a wsp y-pipe, no cat after that just straight 2.5" pipe with two resonators and a WS muffler. I just bought a magnaflow hi-flow cat (thanks t6378tp ) so maybe that will quiet it down. One more piece I'd like to change is the one cali exhaust manifold still left and I want to replace it with a fed spec mani. I think this should be enough for the SC short of headers. Does it drone? I don't care if it is loud when I accelerate.

Yes but the exhaust is so loud I don't notice it.

Here's a quick clip of what it sound like; just recorded and it's dark out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fI8xD6Qj0o

I'll be going out tonight and I'll bring my cam to take a clip while driving, maybe it will help.

So would my Magnaflow resonator be a glorified glasspack or a true Helmholtz Resonator or a hybrid?

I think I might add a $30 Hedman Glasspack first before I add a muffler. Not much will be left of my b-pipe. lol

Quickywd01 isn't turbocharged, that makes a huge difference. Turbocharged cars are much quieter than NA or SC cars because the turbo acts as a muffler. My car is tons louder NA than it was turbo with the same exhaust setup.

thats your setup you may need to mod the exhaust alittle to fit the cat. that looks like a 5gen y-pipe

Has anyone ever tried one of these? Possibly could be used as a low restriction removable silencer in the muffler.

Kevlo911 here is a short sound clip of the exhaust in the car. All windows are shut. Accelerating slowly from a dead stop to about 35mph with rpms below 2k. My auto trans is also acting up, it's slipping and I don't know what is causing it so that also makes the exhaust louder since I need more rpms to move the car and that's also why I drive so slow. Sorry for forgetting to turn on the light: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSK5j59MR-I

My "cat-back" will need to be shortened and have the flange repositioned where it belongs after the cat. Then your cat will be bolted in. I also need to have a bung welded into the exhaust for a aem uego kit, I'm thinking in the y-pipe before the cat. I have a '99 cali spec and that's what I told warpspeed when I bought the y-pipe. I can't remember the differences in y-pipes so I can't explain that one. All I know is I will be looking for a "front" fed. spec. exhaust manifold to remove the last pre-cat and the exhaust is done; at least till I can get funds for headers.

I'm currently NA, hopefully be SC soon. It's hard when you're not employed. But I've been hard at work squirling away parts for a few months now. Can't wait till I can back that exhaust up with some power.

Only thing is he went from no muffler to a muffler. So I don't know how much it would help me.

I think I found a solution

http://www.mosaicmotorsports.com/ape...ilencer%2090mm

Only thing is I need a muffler with a 90mm tip and that is strait thru. What do you guys think. I like the idea, it is similar to Nissans variable flow mufflers.

Basically I was running a 2.5" cattman cat-back with resonator & a cat. Now with the new set-up I will be using 2 Cattman muffler " à la M5 " so I will be running 3" from the headers, a 3" resonator & a 3" high flow cat. At this point I dont know if I will order the 3" from cattman or just custom fabricate that part. The left made Cattman muffler is on it's way and I should have it next week. With your set-up I would get the cattman cat-back but it's a little more expensive than a possible custom set-up.
