Finished: 3.5 turbo swap into '99

After starting this swap 4 years ago, I finally finished and took it for a test run today. After blowing my 3rd boosted 3.0 motor in 2006, I bought a 3.5 with only 700 miles on it with the intent to build it; however, as time passed and I got busier, the goal steadily went from building it to "let's just get it to work and out of the garage." So here's the result of working on it a couple days a year over 4 years.

Here's the gist of the setup-
3.5 motor w/ 3.0 timing components
Pathfinder TB
SSIM
Z32 MAF
440cc injectors
AEM FPR
Cartech FMU
E-manage Ultimate
J&S
Water injection
Kenne Bell Boost a spark
T3/T04S 60-1
Tial WG
Blitz BOV
And a slew of other stuff I don't remember.

Pics-

Defi gauges, FJO wideband, J&S gauge, Blitz SBC-id boost controller

Mess: J&S, EU.

Top-down IC

No idea where the Nissan badge went

Old toy, new toy

I think the final motivation to finish the maxima was my wife. "Finish the maxima before you even think about starting on the F"

All that's left is some tuning. It's running about 10:1 AFR on 10psi right now. Sometime in the near future I'll do some data logging and get some fine tuning done.

Thanks to all those that helped me work the car a tiny bit at a time over these last 4 years, yeah you too Thendi.

Also, I've got a lot of 3.0 engine parts if anyone is in need of anything.

Didn't take any new pics of the turbo piping, but here's a picture of all the pipes when I got them ceramic coated in '03. It's basically a forward y-pipe that cuts across front engine mount. The downpipe also comes back on top of the front motor mount and runs down and back next to the reverse y-pipe. The turbo sits pretty low since I wanted a straight shot to the intercooler, so I use a Tilton oil pump for the turbo oil drain.

Actually, you're in luck. Found an old pic I took right after we finished fabricating the setup in 2002.

This is almost just like the guy from florida'a setup. I was going to do the samething to aviod moving the battery but did want to use the oil pump.

So now for the important question, which car is faster

Very nice, cool to see old names. Did you hook up the emanage ignition in combination with the JS or only the J&S is taking care of ignition?

This is awesome. You have an ISF and you still bothered to finish your Turbo Maxima.

Purely in a straight line I would love to see these cars head 2 head....Preferrably from a roll.

Only the J&S is taking care of ignition right now. I've got the ignition harness for the EU, but it's not hooked up atm.

Same here, you wont be able to join both unless you have a buffered waste spark adapter, unfortunately (unless you have a new j&s that just came out). Just giving you heads up incase you try and then dont get any spark.

Ahh, I see. I remember when I first got the EU, there were discussions here about making it work in conjunction with the J&S, but I didn't follow it to see if there was ever a resolution. Thanks for the info.

No problem, I spoke to John from JS a few months ago in regards to this, and he said he'll make me a buffered adapter ($100), he also sent me the wiring diagram incase I wanted to do it myself but I just left it as is lol.

SX7R...glad to see you are back here. Sounds like you have what you need for a healthy ~400+ whp setup.

You did not mention a fuel pump, but my swapped VQ35 with a V2 Vortech and 440 injectors would run outta fuel at about ~420ish whp, and that's with a BAP (16V on a 255 Walbro) and fuel pressure at 70psi.

Your T3/T04S 60-1 will easily out flow and make more power than my power-robbing V2.

I'm also running a 255 Walbro, so I'll probably end up needing more fuel as well. Thanks for the heads up.

returnless or return style fuel system? if the former, convert to the latter. returnless is garbage. you can run a single walbro 255 to about 500-550, maybe 600whp (depending on the dyno) before you start to see any pressure fluctuations. point being that on a stock motor there is no way you should be running out of fuel on a walbro. if you want more flow and don't want to dck around with a twin pump setup go with a Bosch 044 setup.

Return style. It was easier to implement.
