Wheel Sizes? Please clarify

Hey all!
I've been browsing Maxima.org for about a week now and really enjoy learning about the Maxima culture (cause it really is a culture) and seeing everyone's mods. They all look great! This is my first post ever..please help me out

I was reading around the forum and was wondering if I could get a clarification on what the 3 numbers on wheel sizes were. All I know is that on a 235/40/17 for example, the rim size is 17 inches. What are the other 2 numbers? Also, can someone explain offset to me? I'm curious to learn as much as I can. Thanks all!
