Im so ****ed with Tirerack !!!!

After doing some research, I ended up deciding to order two Sumitomo HTR+ Ultra A/S tires. Bought them in 225-45-17 size. Since they are on sale, I ended up getting a price for the tires delivered to my doorstep for $182 !! Un-friggin-real ! I was like ok !
Hell ONE Michelin Pilot Ultra A/S costs $190+...
So.....I get a call from a rep from Tirerack at work saying there's a problem with my order. He says he's cancelling my order because of liability issues with selling me tires that dont match oem tire ratings. He then invites me to buy an oem size tire 225-50-17, lo and behold he has only three !
1- Bridgestone Potenza RE-92 - ugghh !-
2- Goodyear Eagle RS-A
3- Michelin Pilot Sports A/S.
Sorry pal, I will get the tires one way or another. Bait and switch at its best.
FWIW, I ended up having the tires ordered through a pal who owns an auto repair shop, wholesale price delivered saved me $8. - $176
I should have em by Monday morning.

Any body else get this shabby treatment !!
Oh, the kicker, when I asked him the 3-4 2002 Maxima owners who put a positive response on tirerack.com's reader reviews ended up getting their tires from tirerack.com, he didn't have an answer...

It's not a bait and switch, he's following guidelines. I had that happen to me once with them. I tried to order 225/35/19's to match the ones I had on my car at the time. After finding out it was a Maxima, they would not sell me the tires. Not only the ones I wanted, nothing at all in that size. The load rating of the tires in that size weren't high enough for a Maxima. They never tried to push me onto a more expensive tire, just told me that the only tires they would sell me would be 235/35/19 anything else that met or exceeded the load ratings needed for a car this size. In fact, the tires tires they suggested were cheaper than the ones I tried to order. But I only needed 2 tires because I only had to replace 2 due to uneven wear and I wasn't prepared to buy 4 new 235 tires.
I ended up getting the tires from another shop because I don't have a problem with running 225 tires and the other shop didn't ask. But I have ordered 1 set of rims, and over 5 sets of tires from the Tire Rack with nothing but exceptional customer service. Every order was delivered the exact day they told me it would be and shipping is very, very cheap compared to anyone else. All of my friends order from there without one single complaint (very rare in this industry).
I think you may be overreacting a little. I mean, the tires were on sale which means they are most likely trying to clear them out of the warehouse so inventory may be spotty. About half the items I ordered from the Tire Rack were on clearance, and never once did they try to push me onto a higher priced alternative.

Strange but understandable. With all the fingerpointing over the Ford/Firestone problems I can understand their fear.
I doesn't look like an inventory problem. They still have stock on those. And it's not the speed rating or rim size.
It's gotta be the lesser load rating. 93 stock vs 90 on those Sumis.
For anybody else buying perhaps telling them you have a 95-99 Max or similar lighter car instead (my 97 has a stock 91 load rating).
Oh, and I've run 86 rated Azenis harder then anybody can imagine for the past year without a problem.

That is not bait and switch, if anything they're definitely following safety protocols. There's a fine-line between B&S and Protocol - Tirerack has never been the one to risk the safety of their consumers.

I just had a similar experiece ordering 225-45-17 Sumitomo HTR+. The order was canceled because the tires did not have the proper load rating for the car. I ended up purchasing Sumitomo HTR+ 234-40-18's instead and am very happy with them. I found this to be a good reason to upgrade to 18's. There are far more tire combinations avail in that size...
As far as 235's not fitting on 7.5" rims, I doubt that is correct. The '04 Max comes with 245-45's on 7.5" rims without any issues and I have seen numerous combinations of 245's on 7.5" rims in 40-series.

I still think that Tirerack provides the lowest prices and the largest choice of brand tires and sized. Big-O-Tires refused to deal with me because I wanted Kumho's KH11 225/50/17. So I ordered them from Tirerack at a price of $98 per tire (no taxes!), whereas the retail price is $136 + taxes. So yeah, I am happy.

screw that
i'd just lie to them and tell them that I have a different car.
that's all.
But I can understand their concern although what they should do is not ruin their sale but strongly warn/suggest/advise the customer against that tire size.
I don't see why they refuse to sell.
But overall, their customer service is great and their shipping is super quick. I ordered 3 sets of tires from them and will continue to do so in the future.

i have had nothing but praise for the tire rack. i just ordered moda r6 wheels with pirelli zero nero tires in 18 x 8 with 235-40-18 for 2000 max se. i also put a set of mille miglia wheels, and yokomama avs es100 this summer for the lexus sc400 in 18 " x 8, and 18" x 9 with no complaints. they are great. ordered on a monday, and ups was pulling up on wednesday.

I love TireRack. I have always received good service from them.
They are doing people a service by not selling them unsafe tires.
OEM tire load rating for a Maxima is 1433LBS.
Consider that the front end of the Maxima (unloaded) has over 900LBs of weight on each front tire. Throw in a driver and front passenger and the front tires are supporting around 1000LBs each.
Most of those tires like 225/45/17 only have a load rating from around 1320LBs.

yeah, it's called being safe. i've had very good experiences with tire rack. go with the correct size and be done with it. they may lose your business by not selling you the incorrect size, but they save a lot of money in lawsuits that people would be filing when their tires fail.

well after couple weeks with sumitomo htr+ - $164 for the pair - i can safely say these things are 10x btr than the stock craptenzas re92's. handles a lot better in the rain, and they hook up right away from a dead stop. my max had 27K miles, and although the craptenza's weren't bald, they would not hook for anything. i could literally spin 3/4 through first gear with my auto.
the sumi's are awesome, I would recommend them to anybody, thanks to Syop for his suggestion in getting them.
went the track, got a 2.2 60' so they are doing a great job !
