Another Michelin Pilot Sport A/S question

I got 65,000 mi. out of my first set of Pilot Sport A/S. Great tire - especially in the rain. My center section of tread wore completly out while the sides still have 3/32's left. I generally ran 32lbs. rear and 33/34lbs in the fronts. Do you guys think the tire would wear more evenly if I used a lower pressure like 29 rear and 31/32 front? Or is the center section a softer compound and will always wear quicker? I just ordered a new set from Costco ($60.00 rebate right now) $853.00 out the door. Another thing, the tire noise really went up as the center tread wore away. Thanks, Dave 2000SE

Yeah, that's probably the reason. You should post this in the tires/wheels forum to get more answers, if a moderator hasn't moved this thread already.

i run pilot sport a/s as well in 235/50/17. i run 34-35psi all around and i too have the center tread running out before the outside. i get an alignment about every 5k or whenever i feel it pull. also have the tires balanced when i rotate them every 5k. i tried backing off on the pressure but the handling suffered tremendously. if you dont notice a difference then you might try running 30psi but i woudlnt go any lower than that seeing the recommended is 31.

I think basically what happens is that if you run a higher psi in the tire, the center tread bulges out in comparison to the outer tread on the tire. That will make the center tread wear more than the outer tread. Conversely, if you ran a lower psi in the tire than recommended, you would notice more wear on the outer tread of the tire.

This would happen on any kind of tire however, the rate of wear varies based on the particular tire (ie: compound...etc).

Yes, i just got the coupon for the $60 rebate also, I am excited as it would have been close to a thousand for them. I am ordering mine Monday and can't wait to get them. By the way, was it $853 installed?

Sweet price. I checked into a quote a local Sears today (I was at the mall anyway so...I plan on buying from Tirerack but thought I'd check.)

4 225/50-17 Pilot Sport A/S's, 4 valve stems, disposal charge mount & balance, labor & tax = $1005.19 w/ no hazard protection. Pilots were 219.99 ea. I asked if they would match Tirerack or any other quote. Response; "uhhhh...NO!" Oh yeah, not in stock and 5-7 business days to deliver the treads to the shop.

Sizes

So, I think I know that only 225/50/17 and 235/50/17 are the only sizes that go on the Maxima Stock 7" rim. I was wondering is it possible that 235/45/17's will fit on that stock rim? Anyone know?

235/45 will fit on stock wheels but they are not recommended according to tirerack's site. many members here run them with no problem. just make sure you pay attention careful attention to the psi you run which should be done with any tire. even some members run 245/45 on stock wheels but i wont name any names. Center of my pilots wore out first also. They were never overinflated. This leads me to believe that wear is related to other conditions.

I recall that the Pilots have different compounds for the center and outer edges. I think the center is a grippier compound that wears more quickly.

One thing, the outer edges of these tires show little wear. There is NO rounding of the edges.
