Replacing tires, should I upsize?

Replacing tires, should I upsize?
I have a 2k1 SE Max with stock 16" wheels and some crappy Fulda German tires that I'm really concerned about for winter driving. I bought the car in Florida but now drive it in Virginia.
I don't care about curb appeal, I care about performance. So, I'm not sure I'd be better off with a 17" or 18" tire. Specifically, I want the tire to have a fairly stiff sidewall that will corner well. On a previous car I had put on Goodyear Eagle HPs and they SUCKED! It made my car feel like the suspension was made of jelly. I put on some Dunlop Sport A2s and my car felt like it was riding on rails.
If I only had to pay for the tire I'd be more likely to consider upgrading to 17's or 18's, but as it is I'd obviously need new wheels and that is something I'm not sure I can afford and like I said I'm not so sure it'd be worth it. As it is, I'm leaning towards spending a little more on solid tires versus wasting the money on upgrading the wheels and then only affording mediocre tires.
Tires I'm considering (prices from TireRack):
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S - $171
Dunlop SP Sport A2 - $88
Yokohama Avid V4 - $86
For the price difference I'm having a hard time justifying the Michelin's because I could replace the Dunlop/Yokohama's twice as often for the same price...

Bridgestone Turanza LS-H are very good tires. I am currently run them on my wheels...been on it for 20K + and still give good performance, overall. I also live in Virginia. Bought them from Costco w/discount plus free lifetime rebalancing and tire rotations.
