Falken Ziex-512 + 4" Heavy Snow = No Problem

As I'm sure most in the midwest and northeast are well aware, we had a nice late winter blast of heavy wet snow. Columbus, Ohio has received about 4-5" overnight while I was at work. After recently purchasing the Falken 512's I was pretty bummed as it appeared I would not get to try them out in the snow. Bottom line, I cannot compare these tires to the Potenza's...wouldn't be fair to the 512's to even mention them in the same thread as the Potenza's. These tires grip very well even during lane changes on the freeway in heavy slushy snow. I am very pleased that I went this tire. For all the (which tires should I get) theads...this one answers the question for you. You cannot go wrong with these tires. Buy them...quit thinking about it.

SEmy2K2go,

Thanks for the info. I was wondering how good these tires were going to be in the snow. Time to replacing the Crapenzas pretty soon...

No problem. I've been reading thread after thread about people wondering how these tires are in wet conditions and in the snow, so I thought I'd share what experience I've had so far with my 1500 miles I've clocked on them. I've driven in heavy rain and now heavy wet snow. The wet traction is excellent and like I mentioned before, glad I went with the 512's.

Anyone know how they compare dry traction-wise to... say.. the michelin pilot A/S?

I can't compare the two because I've never driven on a set of the Michelin's, but the 512's are quite soft and do really well on dry traction as well. Handling is very much improved over the Potenza's. I guess when you're talking about the 512's being 1/2 as much as the Michelin's, that is a major factor as well.

on the other hand, there's Falken Azenis ST-115 which I almost rear ended the car in front of me twice from sliding and few trips back and forth on my driveway to get in my garage.

Well, the 512's are considered an All-Season performance tire, the Falken Azenis ST-115 is not an all season tire. It's not a fair comparison between these two Falken models.

I knew that. I'm just telling people not to drive w/ them on snow

Here's an interesting question: Have you driven your car with dedicated snow tires for comparison?

...Or maybe even another car with snow tires? Doesn't mean as much, but I'm just looking for more reference.

Yes I have. I have set of Michelin Alpines on my other car right now. Definitely much more stickier in snow. I don't have problem getting my car going.

I guess the point to this thread was to inform members on the wet/snow traction of the 512 as there are numerous posts inquiring about the 512 specifically.

I drove on the Michelin Sport A/S on my Max. Really great tires. However, can't afford another set ($800 installed). Too much for my blood. I'd rather get springs and struts with the money I save. I decided to go with the Falken Ziex 512 after all your comments. Thanks.

My only concern is the tread life though. I hope that it'll last me at least 50,000 miles with aggressive driving. Anyone take a jab as to the life of the tire?

You're right. 50K is a little ambitious. Realistically, I'm hoping for at least 3 years or 35,000.
