To replace the OEM tires. I have a 2k2 GLE. I'm wondering what size and what tires are recommended. I know the Michelon's are incredible, but after having another child and buying a new home and furnishing it, I'd rather buy something a little less expensive.

Are they a direct replacement? If not, what size works on the stock 2k2 GLE rims?

I'm assuming you have 225/50/17s. You can get a direct replacement.

Nope, 02' GLE OEM is 215/55-17.

Virus - Select a mfgr./tire that meets your price point, driving-style, objectives, etc. and run the numbers. There are many options out there that will meet your needs.

Tirerack only lists Bridgestone and Goodyears.

Correct, because you are only searching on equivilent OEM 215/55-17's. You will need to get creative and search on "other sizes." Also, don't limit yourself to a touring class (e.g. EL42's) tire unless that's what you want/need. Understand what your stock EL42's specs are and use that as a baseline for comparison. For example, I focused on a tire that would offer the performance gain I was looking for while staying as close as possible to the OEM diameter and load rating. The mfgr. and size I chose best met my needs while ensuring proper (and safe) fitment on the stock 02 GLE wheel. But, each person has different criteria and expectations driving their decision and what was right for me isn't necessarily right for them. I was willing to give up a [very] little ride quality and long-term tread wear for slightly more footprint and less sidewall. I had/have no desire to replace my OEM wheels and after doing adequate research I was able to easily make my decision. I'm not going to suggest a mfgr. or size specifically because "it's just another opinion on the net."

You should be able to go 225/50/17 on the GLE, The bridgestone turunza ls-v (good tirerack review) & the falken 512 both come in that size. let me know what tire you get Im about ready for some new rubber too.
