BFGoodrich® Tires Introduces g-ForceTM T/A® Drag Radial Racing SLICK; Teams With Skunk2 Racing On Development Of New Tire
by: BFGoodrich Tires
In a first for BFGoodrich® Tires and for sport compact drag racing, the company is introducing a new radial drag racing slick tire named the g-ForceTM T/A® Drag Radial SLICK tire. The new tire will be the first drag radial slick to be used in sport compact drag racing competition.
BFGoodrich Tires is teaming with Skunk2 Racing to develop the new tire with the goal of pursuing a NHRA series championship. The new tire will debut on Skunk2 Racing's 2003 Acura RSX drag car driven by Sean Hillier at the NHRA Summit Sport Compact event in Englishtown, NJ on May 1, 2004.
The new BFGoodrich g-ForceTM T/A® Drag Radial SLICK tire (new size 26x9x15) is being developed in partnership with Skunk2 Racing, one of the world's premier sport compact aftermarket parts manufacturers and their drag racing team.
Traditional drag racing slick tires are bias-ply technology while the new BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial SLICK features modern radial technology allowing for consistent performance at launch. In addition, the new tire will particularly benefit front-wheel-drive vehicles by contributing to keeping the car stable through the traps.
"This development program is not only a first for BFGoodrich Tires, it is a first for sport compact drag racing, " said Thom Peebles, BFGoodrich Tires brand director. "The introduction of the g-Force T/A Drag Radial SLICK positions the brand to enter a new domain of competition) radial SLICK racing. "
Designed to outperform traditional bias-ply slick tires, the new g-Force T/A Drag Radial SLICK features construction and compounds designed specifically for high-speed drag racing. The new tire includes a softer rubber compound optimized for straight-line grip versus a typical road racing or oval racing tire.
"We are extremely excited to try this new tire out in competition, " said Dave Hsu, president of Skunk2 Racing. "This is the first time we have been involved in the development of a tire and we welcome the opportunity to combine our motorsports program with BFGoodrich's tire experience to develop a winning program. "
"We're excited to have BFGoodrich Tires bring new technology to the NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series with the introduction of their new radial drag racing slick, " said Gary Darcy, NHRA vice president of marketing. "BFGoodrich's new radial tire will add to the competitiveness and excitement of NHRA's Sport Compact Series which will benefit competitors and fans alike. "
"We continually receive questions from teams and competitors asking about our involvement in drag racing and our intention to produce a radial drag racing slick, " said Todd Steen, motorsports marketing manager for BFGoodrich Tires. "This tire is the answer to those questions and we look forward to seeing our new SLICK perform in competition and compete for the NHRA championship. "
In initial engineering tests done by BFGoodrich Tires and Skunk2 Racing, the new g-Force T/A Drag Radial SLICK has demonstrated very quick and consistent 60 foot times and trap speeds.
"We're ready to go racing, " said John "Johnny O" Omundson, director of motorsports and product development for Skunk2 Racing." Both Skunk2 and BFGoodrich Tires have put a lot of time into the development of this vehicle/tire combination and we're ready to see the results at the first NHRA race at Englishtown. "
Skunk2 Racing's front-wheel-drive 2003 Acura RSX (Skunk2 Racing Project Delta) features new chassis dynamics and new chassis geometry, as well as the new Skunk2 Racing K-Motor. Onboard, the new vehicle will sport a complete data acquisition system, a first in the world of sport compact drag racing. This unique system will be used to track the vehicle's performance, chassis dynamics, and aid in the tire's development by delivering wheel speed, tire slip, ride height at all four corners, throttle position, engine RPM, clutch slip, longitudinal acceleration, and more. In addition, tire temperatures and pressures will be measured immediately before and after burnout and run.
Skunk2 Racing will use the tire throughout the remainder of the 2004 race season and current plans call for BFGoodrich Tires to work with additional teams in future seasons to further develop the tire.
Designed to outperform traditional bias-ply slick tires, the g-Force T/A Drag Radial SLICK is the latest in the tire manufacturer's arsenal of successful drag racing radials. In addition to the new g-Force T/A Drag Radial SLICK tire, BFGoodrich Tires offers a full line of street-legal g-Force T/A Drag Radials in 23 sizes ranging from 14- to 18-inches.
BFGoodrich® Tires combines technological expertise with vast motorsports experience, delivering a high-performance tire for every type of vehicle from ultra-high performance tuner vehicles, sports cars and SUVs to the hottest sport trucks, pickups and rock-crawling rigs in the world.
For more than 30 years, BFGoodrich Tires has used motorsports as a proving ground.
