225/45/17 on 2002 Max stock rim?

Can I use this size instead of 225/50/17? I found some good take off tires in that size.

Yes and I would recommend it. I run that size and it is just fine, and you're not limited to like 3 different kinds of crappy tires. I think it looks better, also.

And don't waste your money on crappy bridgestone potenza RE-92's.

225/45 is do-able, but you'll need to run them at 4 or 5 psi more inflation pressure to regain the load capacity that's lost due to its slightly smaller size.

I didn't think they were that much smaller?? -05 profile? which essentially is a shorter sidewall, correct?? Will it make that big of a difference?

Yup.

Consider that the 5% profile difference represents 10% of the baseline profile [of 50]. The difference in rated load for a 225/50-17 94Y vs a 225/45-17 91Y is about 9% (1477 lbs vs 1356 lbs). Close enough for a rough cut.

Essentially, the load capacity of any given tire is a function of the volume of air contained and the inflation pressure. A rough estimate of volume for quickie comparison purposes can be made from [section width]*[section height]*[mean circumference]. While it's not a linear relationship, if you give away a little volume you'll need more inflation pressure to compensate. In this specific case, approximately 10% less volume needs about 15% more inflation pressure to maintain the same load capacity.

So, what is the final consensis here? Go with the 225/45's or stick with the 50's? Will it be a huge visual notice?
