Would 225/45/17 fit the 5th gen. oem se wheels? Would there be any differences in ride or etc.?

Basically it's up to you...some say it's safe, other say it's not. You need to read those and decide.

 

225/45 would fit, and I believe it's within spec for a 7" wide wheel - but your speedo will be off as the overall diameter is going to be smaller, and of course ride quality may suffer due to the thinner sidewall.

 

so why not 235/45-17?

Ever-so-slightly smaller overall diameter...not in spec for 7" wide wheel...or any of the other reasons discussed in the million threads about that tire size.

 

Like you said, there are a million threads on this...I think the ones I posted above talk pretty well to both sides, so it's up to the owner if he wants to do it.
