Anybody put 235 tires on their maxima?

The guy at tireracktold me that 235's should fit with no problems and they shouldn't rub or be to wide. Is this true?

I had 235/45-17's on my stock 17" SE rims (before going to 19's), and they fit perfectly. Now if you are talking about aftermarket rims, then it depends on rim width. I'm assuming that you are talking about stock 17's in this thread.

Indigo, I'm assuming you're asking about 235 tires on stock 17" rims... ya need to tell us these things... anyways... like ScreamingVE said... check the Rims and Tires section of the FAQs for some good info...

I'm running 235/45/17 Falken ZEIX 512s on my stock 17's and its been fine... so I'd say its true....

I'm assuming you're talking about stock Maxima rims, in which case 275's on 7" wide rims would not be advisable, as the sidewall would be extremely distorted, causing excessive heat build up. At high speed that could spell disaster - tire failure at high speed is not something you want to have happen. 275's would need to be on a 9"-10" rim minimum.

235/50/17 will slow down the car due to a larger outside diameter.

That's hillarious that one Rep from Tirerack told you 235 tires would be fine, but they cancelled my order on my ContiExtreme Contacts last year because they were not the original size.

No Problems

I have Kumho Ecsta's in 235 on stock 17's for over a year.

No major problems, but they will "roll" on the rims a bit when pushed to the extreme limits when cornering HARD. This feels somewhat similar to breaking traction in a powerslide, but more akin to the sensation of a soft sidwall buckling under hard cornering loads.
I have the Illumina/progress spring set-up, so when I mean corner HARD - I mean HARD! The rolling effect is felt only when the Illuminas are set on 4/5 (firmest setting). It's a heavy car -- whattya gonna do?!

I doubt you'd notice this effect on the stock suspension, or Tok Blues / KYB Gr-2's as they aren't as aggressively damped.

I have 10k miles on these skins so far - and they're not wearing too badly -- just starting to get a little noisy, and probably half-way worn. So, I'll get about 20k with regular rotation. Not bad for an aggressive tire that cost under $100 each!

The only thing I TRULY don't like about these tires, is that the trade-off in ride comfort vs. handling performance is a little painful. Probably due to the VR rated sidewalls. Next set may have to be a bit less agressive!

hope that helps.

235/50/17's have an outside diameter that is .39 inches larger than stock. It's a nice amount and enough to slow down the car if they were on the drive wheels. However, if they are only on the rear then I don't see a problem. In fact I was thinking of staggering my tire size to increase ride comfort and help fill in the rear wells.

As far as the 235/45/17's, I wouldn't want to give up the sidewall for the extra width. The 235/45/17 is also over 1/2 inch smaller than the stock size.

if you are going to change the size with stock rims do not go 235/50/17. you are completly changing the tire... do a 235/45/17 it almost the same. it will not throw out you spedo or mileage. there is NO reason to do a 235/50/17 it makes no sense... i have run 235/45/17 on mine for two years with no problems and they look better..

So Ed, you are saying that 235/50 17's are a problem? What types of problems might the slight oversize cause?

A 235/50/17 has an outside diameter of 26.2519 inches. The stock size is 25.8582. That's a increase of .39 of an inch. If you have an automatic, it will take longer for your car to roll through the gears and you won't like the way your car shifts. Automakers engineer the wheels to work with the transmission.

A 235/45/17 has an outside diameter of 25.3267 which is over 1/2 inch decrease when compared to the stock size. Don't do this if you have an automatic you won't like it at all.

It's like those people who change their wheels on their 4x4's. When they do it they also change their gearing to compensate for the extra mass that now must be turned.

Stay within .15 of an inch and you shouldn't feel much. I have a .14 inch decrease and I can feel the difference in my transmission but it's not bad.
