I have seen several different models of Pilots. I know most of the rave is on the Sports a/s. There are other models I have seen as well. are all pilots as good as the sport a/s or are there differences between them. Are there any models to stay away from?

 

I'm interested in hearing replies to this question. I was going to get pilot sport a/s's as summer tires for good wet traction (I have winter tires), but now there are the new pilot sport ps2's. I wonder how they compare, in wet traction and price.

 

I am planning on getting some of the pilot sports. I believe the ps2's come in a minimum tire size of either 17 or 18". So you need to double check that. Since I live in Texas, I am not getting the a/s's. More expensive and not necessary for me. I think the pilot sports and the pilot sport a/s's have similar wet performance. The a/s's are just better for snow.

 

I don't know about the other Pilot tires, but the A/S's kick a$$, but at a price... They're an arm and a leg!
I can tell you this about them, I don't think you'll need the snow tires if you get 'em. I'm a die-hard snow-boarder and have taken my Max out in the worst of weather. As long as the snow doesn't cover my hood, I can drive through it w/ the pilots. Great on wet roads as well. I wouldn't have bought a second set if I didn't think it was worth it.

 

hey guys! I'm quite new to this forum and I'm not quite sure if this is the right place to post this, but I just have one question. Actually, I posted this already but I just wanna ask anybody who is not busy right now ( ) will it damage my RIMS if ever I drive my car with less air pressure on the tires? Like around 24-25 psi? Because that's what it read in the gauge yesterday morning (a very cold morning with temps at below 30's) and I drove the car for over 600 miles the past 3-4 days. (The temps during those 3-4 days was b/w 28 - 45 deg).

Ummmmm........ NO. Pilots A/S is one of the best all season tires.

 

I have the new PS2's and love them! Smooth, quiet ride. Excellent dry and very good wet traction. Very well made tire. Way better than the bridgestone SO-3's but much quieter and softer ride.

 

skalberti, what didn't you like about the SO-3's? They're supposed to be great tires. The only problem I've heard of is that they stick too much which causes a lot of tramlining.

 

The solid band in the center of the tire causes the tramlining. They make a lot of noise, are very harsh with bumps due to the stiff sidewall. Other than that they are great tires. My PS2's have everything that the SO-3's have as far as wet and dry traction and hydroplane resistance, but with out the harsh ride, road noise and the awful tramlining. The PS2 is a very sticky tire, wet or dry. ALso its not a directional tire so you can rotate criss cross rather than just front to back.

 

Whoa, crazy. Asymetric, but non-directional design....

Looking at the PS2, I would have imagined it would tramline even WORSE because of its solid center rib and otherwise very rib-like design. Interesting to know now though. Carcass stiffness must be a factor too though I imagine.


To answer the question about all "Pilot" models, your best bet is to go to TireRack and read the tests/reviews. The best are the Pilot Sport A/S and the Pilot Sport 1 or 2. The others seem less popular.

 

But if you look at the number of reviews, there is a big difference between the A/S's and the other pilot sports. I just think the A/S's are a more commonly used tire because of all the people who want a year round tire on their car.

i currently have pilot sport a/s on my maxima...they perform amazingly in the snow I have to say I wasnt ever concerned with losing grip...however they are an oil based compound which wore down extremely quick 25k miles and its time for new ones. I drive a lot on the highway and a bit in the city and I must say performance they are great...but not worth the price IMO seeing that they wear out as quick as they do. I am considering pirelli pzeronero m+s tires or these cooper all season ones they sell down the street which appear to be nice.
