need some advice

Hi guys .. I have a 97 gxe with tokico hp's on the front and stock springs (no drop). My wheels are the 04 max wheels (18 x7.5) and the tires are yoko avs es100 225/40/18. the wheels look nice on the car but the ride is very bad. every on the street is transfered to the car and sometimes the car gets loose over some bumps.thats why I'm afraid of droping the car too. my question is what's the biggest most comfy tire size I can go with instead of the ones I have? thanks for reading.

I'd wager the issue is more your suspension than the tires.

Maybe you feel the road more due to lower profile tires. I also think that it's your suspension and not so much your wheel/tire.

I don't know how much stiffer (if any) the Tokicos are than stock for your Gen, but a lot of the harshness is probably due to your really low profile tires since you don't have springs or any other mods it sounds like. If you went from 15" or even 16" wheels, 18" is a big jump and will introduce a lot more harshness. The ES100 has pretty stiff sidewalls too. Offset of the wheels might not help (sometimes).

Don't know if you want to switch back to 17" wheels and a more comfort-oriented tire....

That's what I'm looking for. Will 245/40/18 fit on my car? also I had KYB GR2s before the Tokicos and they went bad after one year!!. Now when you guys talk about the problem being with the suspension and not the tires, what part of the suspension do you mean?

Yes they will fit. I'm using 2k4 wheels w/ 245/40/18 for the winter.
