Tires for Maxima

I need to replace awful Potenzas with good all-season tires. I called a few shops and inquired about Michelin HydroEdge; however they're not available in P225/50/17R but only in P225/55/17R... They suggested not to change the size due to clearance and speed factors. Can anyone suggest all-season tires with better than good ratings (snow driving, noise, tread wear and price are important) in P225/50/17R? Thank you in advance!

It's a rare size, 2 optional and debated sizes are 215/55 and 235/45 both 17's.

I just posted this in another thread, and I'll just repost it here:

I just put 4 new Falken Zeix ZE-512s on my Max, and I love them. They're a good all season tires, and cost about $100 a piece. I had Sears price match a price I found at Discount Tire Direct (since they carry them) and put them on locally. I'm very happy with them so far, though it has only been about 2500 miles. Check them out.

Fortunately, the choices are slowly getting better.

For whatever is worth on the 512s, the question I pose is, do you want your car to have the floaty feel of a 73 Caprice? If not, look somewhere else and don't waste your money. My car felt like a land yacht after I put on a set of 512s (stock size). Those tires are very sticky both in the wet and dry, just okay in the snow (up to an inch or two) and were as quiet or hydroplane compared to the crapenzas. The weak point of the 512s is their weak sidewalls, which are so soft that any steering input lags about half a second. Cornering feel is also hurt badly as the tires just roll in the wheels (at times it felt like I had a tire going flat but they were fine). I cut my losses after only 3300 miles because I couldn't stand their unsafe feel. Just for comparison, the set of snow tires I have on the car now (225/55 16s) feel tighter and give much better feedback than the 512s ever did. Snow tires of larger profile! that says it all...

I need tires soon. I can't fit the Toyo Proxes 4 or Toyo Proxes TS-1, perhaps you can.
Apparently they are both quite good with the TS-1 being lighter weight.

I have narrowed it down between the Yokohama Avid H4S and BF Goodrich (made by Michelin) Traction TAs. The price is a coin toss. Both have 100,000 kilometre tread life rating.

See the ratings on tirerack.com.

The Yokohamas are somewhat better from a noise and comfort level, but the BF Goodrich have better traction in dry, wet and snowy weather and can be pushed harder. The Traction TAs are rated as being quieter than my existing Goodyear Eagle RSAs and are higher rated in all other respects. Since I have an SE with a 5-speed I will opt for the BF Goodrich Traction TAs and keep my eye out for the Costco BF Goodrich sale in the spring. Both the tires I mentioned are H-rated whereas the Michelin Hydroedge is T-rated. I had considered the Hydroedge but not for long.

not sure what year your ride is. but for my '03 its going on BFG traction ta's
'T' rated in 225/55/17 sometime this spring/summer. though i have dedicated snows, still want to have the ability to move during our 'freak snowstorms' in May and Octobers and the occasional run over the Roockies.
