225/45/17 versus 235/45/17
For the best performance the wheel width should be 90% of the tire width. So the 225 would be best for that particular width wheel, but 235's work well too.
On a 4th gen I would rather have 8" wide and at the very least 7.5"

The 235 will look fat(and phat) on a 7" rim. I currently have a 245 on my fronts which are 8". The look is kinda cool. It gives it a really hardcore impression. But the gearing suffers a bit. 235/45 is closest to the OEM OD. The 225/45 will be a smaller OD which will improve the gearing but it will look small in the wheel well.
OEM OD= 25.66"
235/45/17 OD= 25.46"(Closest to OEM and most grip but the gearing isn't any better than stock)
225/45/17 OD= 25.1"(Best gearing out of these options)
225/50/17 OD= 26"(Fills wheel well the best)
Make your decisions from those #'s. You won't have a problem running the 235. I say go for it. And since your 5Spd I recomend it even more. You need all the grip you can get and the gearing is much better than the auto.

Cool, thanks a lot for all the info. Very helpful in helping me make a decision!
225/50 or 235/45 will be the decision in the next week...finally will be back on the road after 8 months of storage while at school!
