I need HELP with tires and wheels!!

I have a 2000 GXE and I feel I have a very good grasp of every part of my car except for the tires and wheels in terms of interchagability, so I need some help. I have stock 16" 9-spoke GXE wheels and 215/55/16 91S tires. I need new tires, so I was wondering how wide I can go with tires if I don't get new wheels. Can I get 225/55s? Can I get 235s?
If I get new wheels (which I want to), what do I need to look for when shopping for wheels. Does anybody know the lug pattern of the maxima? I'm looking at these wheels that are 5-114. Also, how wide can I go if I get 17" wheels? Does anybody konw how wide my wheels are now? I have 215s, which equates to 8.4 inches, but the tread is wider than the wheel.

Thank you in advance for all your help

Think about it. If stock wheels are 6.5" wide, and a skinny 215 is 8.4" (almost 2 inches wider), do you want to put anything wider?
If you don't want to change wheels, just get a good tire in the stock size. If you want to improve performance and looks considerably, get high quality wider wheel and tires.
