Load rating question (is tirerack correct?)

I am looking to buy the Avon Tech M550 A/S from the TireRack tomorrow.

I was planning on puttin 235/45/17 on the oem wheel but the csr said it was not wise due to the load rating but according to their own charts they are the same at 1477lbs.

Another issue is that the chart also says the rim width for the 235/45/17 is 7.5 to 9.0 and the 235/50/17 is 6.5 to 8.5.

Which tire should I get from the following:

225/50/17 (oem size)
235/45/17 (tire rack says it won't fit rim and load rating is unsafe)
235/50/17 (4x4 spacing ?)

A lot of people are running 235/45/17s without any problems but I would just stick to OEM size

Tire Rack is on crack saying that the 235/45/17 is unsafe because of load rating. The tire is rated 94 and the stock Potenza is 93, so it is actually a higher rating. They are correct in saying that it is out of spec on a 7" rim though. As Ammi said, lots of orgers are running this size without any problems but it is out of spec.

If you are the conservative type, stick with OEM size. 235/50/17 would also be fine on your OEM rim and will actually decrease wheel gap from OEM but will produce a 1.5% speedo error. If you trust the majority on the org, you will be okay with 235/45/17 although manufacturer specs say it is out of compliance.

Hope this helps.

id say stick to stock and get a set of wheels/tires. ive read over and over about the tires and such, that ive decided to keep stock size tires on the OEM wheels and jus get another set of wheels, possibly 18s and run 235/40/18.. or if im lucky get some 18s with 245/40/18 so that the speedo error is only .5% and much more tread on the ground..

The stock size 225 50 R17 550s are plenty wide, much wider than the Potenzas. If you are going to go Avon stick with the stock size, they handle very well.
