Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and heavy rain - bad!
Just got back from a 400mile trip (san jose - Sacramento area - san jose) and i had a chance to drive during one of the worse rain storms we've had this year. Lots of rain and winds in the 25-30mph strenght.
All i have to say is that i am very very disappointed with my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. These Pilots A/S have about 10k miles on them and a good 70% rubber left on them. They are properly inflated and etc. The rear tires show more wear in the center but they are like new on the sides. (deep thread)
I had 2 people in the car, full tank of gas and in this rain/weather it was SCARY to go faster than 50mph. The car felt extremely unstable and unsecure. A lot of "floating". My tires are NOT bold - they are not even half way worn. And they do cost $200 each.
The way they behaved was unacceptable for their price. I have driven many cars with many different type of tires, but i have rarely been in a situation like this where i had to slow so much. I had MANY many cars pass by me going with 60+ mph. The road was NOT flooded with 1+ inch of water but it was definetely raining hard....still other people's cars were not sliding and floating left and right.
I liked the tires only on WET roads with light rain. Then i could drive them safely all the way to 80mph. If the rain became more intense, i was back in the slow lane doing 55mph. I was kind of shocked, knowing that these tires are well rated. So far, my only problem with them was the high noise level, but the "average" to "poor" wet performance really make me think about replacing them with something that has better wet manners. I am so glad that i did not pay full price for these Michelins. They are NOT worth the money they cost if you'll be driving with them in heavy rain. Maybe when new they are great but as soon as they lose some rubber - they are "average" if not worse.
