what, no sticky for the noobs?

i'm coming up on needing new tires and know nothing about them. I was debating about buying new rims at the same time.

Does changing rim size mess with mpg/mph/odometer?

I live in Phoenix (the surface of the sun), it's a daily driver, i dont race, it's not dropped (yet?), im not looking to spend much.

what size tires should i look at? what size rims? if changing rim size changes mile readings, id like to increase the rim size and decrease the height of the tire, leaving the overall wheel about the same. otherwise it doesnt matter if the wheel is the same size.

brands? sizes? etc

...or should i just take myself to a discount tire and get something?

All depends on what size you're looking for and/or how much you're willing to spend.

i always think OEM rims are nice if you can get them. higher quality than some of those budget rims. less likely to bend (i hope). Ammi posted two of the best sites to check out. i'm constantly comparing prices and reviews on tirerack.com. and the miata guys set up a lifesaver of a site.

not sure what size you want, but i know for 18s, typical tire sizes are 225/40/18 (slightly smaller than stock) and 235/40/18 (slightly larger than stock). and by slightly, the overall diameter will only throw your speedo off by a fraction of a percent. those are the closest and most common tire sizes.
