odometer and speedometer issues with shorter tires?

Okay...we all know shorter tires give better acceleration...which is great for track use....but how about daily driving?

the tire size I'm going with is...

STOCK: 245/45/18
NEW: 275/40/17

now, this isn't for a maxima...but according to this website, http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html , if I input those #'s, it says my "new tire is 3.8% too fast...When your speedo reads 60mph, you are actually traveling 57.7"...

Now, I wouldn't mind if my speedometer read 2.3mph off...I personally would LIKE my speedo to be a little off...only becuz if I end up going over the speed limit, if a cop radars me, then I am actually going slower than what it says in my speedo...but how will this affect my odometer and mileage? will there be any severe effects if i go with this tire size? I heard running a short tire will make you're odometer increase quicker?

any input on this subject will be greatly appreciated!

btw, this is for a nissan 350z...i was wondering where is the odometer, mileage sensor located? front or rear wheels? becuz if the odometer mileage readings come from the front wheels, then i wouldn't have a problem....cuz my front tire setup is very close to stock

i'm just worried about the rear tires....which are 3.8% too fast from stock...is the odometer mileage sensor read through the rear wheels?

Someone else asked this same question a few weeks ago.... No one gave a definitive answer. I need to check this myself, just haven't taken any lengthy trips lately.

Edit: Link to the other thread.

Uh, hello? This subject has been beaten to death in the past.....

As you said yourself, the speedometer will report 3.8% faster than you're actually travelling. Therefore, you'll only travel 962 miles when the odometer says you've travelled 1000 miles. Severe effects? No, but it does make your odometer rise quicker. Having said that, it's not worth the time to adjust the sensor.

Thanks limsandy! Been wondering that, but no one ever provided a clear answer in the other thread, for some reason...

mainly because of the traction when it rains...even minor cracks can become hazards- especially when there is an extreme amount of added power.

might wanna invest in some really nice tires...

I thought that info was for mechanical speedos in older cars. Pretty much all newer cars have electronic speedos that have some adjustment via the computer.
