OEM 2k6 SL wheels not fitting

Just bought some used 2006 maxima SL wheels with 225/55/17 tires mounted for my 99 maxima gxe. Got the wheels balanced and then put them on yesterday. After putting them on there is now a significant side to side wobble in the steering wheel that starts at about 20 MPH and increases with speed. Went back today to where I got them balanced to have them checked again and was going to get them road forced balanced to see if there was a problem with the wheels and/or tires. Guy said that the problem is that the front wheels are not fitting over the hubs and thus are not sitting flush against the rotors. The inside of the wheel also has a beveled edge where it meets the hub. I was under the impression that all maxima wheels were interchangeable for the most part. He suggested about a 1/16" spacer. Should these wheels fit fine without a spacer or should one be needed? Would it be possible to grind the hub to make it slightly smaller in diameter? Any ideas? Anyone have this problem with these wheels before on a 4th gen?

My first thought was that maybe you have a bent wheel as I was under the impression that they would fit.

I was under the same impression. This afternoon I took off the front wheels and removed any surface rust on the hubs with a dremel and the wheels seem to mount flush to the rotors. Stripped a wheel stud in the process So will need to replace that too now when I get a chance.

I'm going to try a front to back rotation and see if that changes anything. If not, then I'm going to go back for a road force balance to see whats up. Was also thinking that it could have been a pre-existing condition (i.e. wheel bearing, ball joints?) that has just now become more apparent since going from 15" to 17" wheels.

Going to be really mad if I was had when I bought these wheels/tires!

Sometimes with stock wheels, surface rust accumulates on the hub. Try sanding down the ring of the hub with either a wire brush or sandpaper and it should do the trick. I had to do this when I mounted my summer wheels last year.

Did you ever have aftermarket wheels with centering rings? They can stay on the hub anf cause all sorts of issues.

No and I even took off the front wheels and cleaned up the hubs with a dremel. Personally I don't think its's being caused by the fit. I'm thinking either a broken belt or a ply separation in the tire. Hopefully not a axle or bearing. Will do a front to back rotation for now and see if that changes anything.
