Thinking of going to track against my friend's laser turbo

This will be my first time ever at the track and I've always wanted to race my friend's plymouth laser 91 turbo since he got it, a year and a half ago but never had a chance because I didn't know where I could drag race legally here in Mtl but now I know so I'll ask my friend if he wants to go there sometime. I have always wonder who would win. I have a stock auto 4th gen (95 gxe) and he has a plymouth laser manual 91 turbo (200hp) stock as well, well I think it is. So what do you guys think? I guess it would depend on my first's abilities to drive stick but I would like to hear about people who knows more than me about drag racing.

what is a laser ? car stats have a plymouth laser rs turbo they have the 90 model at 15.4 and they have a 92 model at 15.0 in the 1/4 mile. you will also have to consider the general condition of each vehicle, since his is older (LOL) maybe its not in as good of shape ? if his car is in excellent condition, maybe he squeaks out a win ?

Lasers, Talon and eclipses are all the same.

Some come with awd, they are 4bangers with turbo's that can easliy be modded. If he has any mods, like a boost controller which lets him boost more than factory your are TOAST. If he has AWD you are TOAST. Your chances against him are slim. Sorry to say those cars are very fast, but they are notorious for their unreliability, which means if he hasn't kept his car in top shape you could also have a chance against him.

Hehe, well the car is older but only has 50k on it and it is in pretty good shape (never out in winter...). I don't think its and AWD though. Anymore thoughts?

i dunno, given the times is see stock 4th gen autos put up, im not sure you have enough to beat him. if you can cut a better light, this will be an advantage but if he cuts better lights its only going to make it even more difficult. be sure to post back the outcome ! and be sure to put up a good old vq30de fight !

Ok well, I'll go if I have a chance since I have to work on the days that we can drag race...I'll give my best and will try not loosing too badly . But it doesn't really matter since it would be a friendly race and no money in. So thx for the comments and hope you guys are wrong

well i have a 2003 max now...and i owned a 1991 laser turbo myself with some mods on it...hands down the laser will take you out...even when my laser was stock it was quick as the 3.5 i own today...the laser i had died in 2002 after 3 transmissions and 1 new engine and 300k miles but i still ran 13's consistently at the track

Ya those talons/eclipses/lasers can easily be modded and with the AWD you'll be playing catchup the whole run, that is if you make more power than him. I raced a modded WRX last week at the track and he killed me off the line thanks to his AWD. I played catchup and fortunately the 3.5 had better top end then him and I passed him to win by .06 seconds or so, but it goes to show that with AWD and a decently powered car (and good driver) maximas are owned easily

wrx owners are really hitting the tracks around here, im not sure what the differences are between the ones im seeing running low 15's to 14 flat and then a few faster ... but we had a several maximas out awhile back and at least as many wrx owners were there and well ....they kicked our teeth in !

got a new video of the chariot racing 2 wrx's, neon srt-4 and a sentra spec v is anyone wants to see let me know and i will point you in the right direction

I'll take a look at those videos. Speaking of the SRT4's, I got to race one last week as well on my first run for the night. He obviously never dragged before cause he completely blew his light, got like a 1.3 reaction and I nailed a .6 or so. He played catchup, but just couldnt catch me. It felt good to outdrive one of those He still trapped at slightly over 100 tho, so its a very capable car. Just not with that guy driving

Yeah, you're lucky the driver wasn't good, these srt-4 has like 230 hp and does 0-60mph in 5.8 sec, it's unbelivable...

Don't sleep on the older Chrysler products. They may be a little junky but they can be made to run very fast.

FWD will be about even. AWD stock will pull out a win. AWD with up'ed boost will kill you. Don't mess with DSM's.

Mods? Speculation is exactly that. It all comes down to what happens on the track.

You're still gonna get it handed to you. Power to weight is on his side.

man thats too bad...well I guess it's still gonna be a close race won't it? Cause it would be worthless if I'm gonna get beat by one or two car length

a car length or to isnt bad its when you you get beat 20+ when it gets ugly...thier fast cars as a stock auto your pretty much done for stock they run mid 14's or so...not much you can do unless hes a bad driver.

Sorry

As the others stated, you're gonna get romped. My trade in for my max was my '97 Eclipse GSX (AKA 2nd gen DSM, generally slower then 1st gen like that guys laser). I had very light mods on my eclipse (intake, cat back exhaust, 1st gen crushed BOV, new piping, etc). At 16 PSI (on race gas at the track) i ran a 13.76 best. When it was stock (Except for the intake, i got that two days after the car) it ran a 14.87. That was with me not knowing how to launch an AWD worth a turd. Now all that said, that was on a broke *** T25 turbo that was basically blowing hot air at 16PSI making it worthless. The 14b turbo's on the 1st Gen's could be cranked up to insane boost levels (With supporting mods) without any regard to the turbo running out of steam. To wrap up, about a month before i got rid of the car i got my buttocks handed to me by a buddy with a 92 Talon TSI (FWD) who ONLY had a boost controller/aftermarket boost gauge.

You do NOT want to screw with any old beat up looking eclipse/talon/laser's as the old nasty looking ones usually are the guys looking more for power then if they can place a 747 tail wing on the rear hatch. If its a 2nd gen eclipse its REAL easy to tell if its turbo or not (Could be obvious such as FMIC etc). Look at the tail pipe (If stock). If its a single pipe, its a NT. Smoke it (Its a neon motor in a DSM body). If its a dual tip its turbo. Looking at it from the front (especially the later model ECLIPSE 97-99 models). Look at the passenger side headlight and look below it. You'll see a round opening near the bottom. If this has a plasic peice covering it, its a NT, if its open, its most likely a turbo. The intercoolers on these were mounted in the fender and this is the air draw for it. Its difficult to describe but next time you see one, take a look you'll see what i mean.

2G spyders all have dual tips.

if the guy can drive at all...youre toast. low 15s to high 14s with a good track. a stock auto 4th gen afaik will run about a 15.9

you do NOT want to run a 1G FWD from a roll. especailly if hes modded.

I disagree, a stock auto will run a 15.6 or .7 on a good day.

I have a friend that ran 13.8's with lighter (and wider) wheels on his dead stock 2003 SRT4. That's before they came with a LSD, too. Now he runs 13.4's in street trim, and 13 flat in race trim. Not too shabby for the amount of money he has in it so far (about $22.5K including original purchase price)...
