ECU issue

Hey guys,

Alright, for the past 2 days I've been trying to figure the ECU diagnostics out. I've been trying to get to mode III to check codes. This is what I did. Turn the ignition to on, but didn't start the motor. Check to make sure both inspection lights are on. Then I turn the mode selector fully clockwise. Now this is where I get confused. Isn't the ECU suppose to blink both lights to indicate the mode? If so, I'm not getting that. My guess is my ECU is giving a codes right off the bat. This is what I get with the Red blinks 2 times, then green blinks 3 times. Then a few seconds later red blinks 3 times, and green blinks 1 time. This then repeats. So those experienced ECU tester people. Am I interpreting this right that I'm getting a Code 23 and a code 31? If so, guess I got a throttle switch to replace, and have to find. As for the code 31, this would indicate ECU input signal being beyond normal range. Any ideas what could cause this? I'm wondering if it has something to do with my positive battery connections. The connector it self is in crappy condition, and I've also notice a fusible link is basic gone.

Re: ECU issue

The ECU self-diagnosis for an 86 are different from the +87 cars.
There are no additional modes to get into.

There's nothing wrong with your ECU giving you the code 23/31, you
didn't completed the full procedure correctly so those codes came up.

To do the self test on the 86 and probably 85 maxima, do the
following:

Verify mode selector is turned fully CCW
Turn ignition switch to "on" position
Inspection lamps will stay "on" (bulb check)
Turn mode switch fully CW
Depress accelerator pedal, then release
Start engine,
Apply brakes and shift to "D" position...nothing said for SE 5sp
Turn one of the load switches....OFF....ON....OFF...
Code #31 will be erased after the E.C.C.S. control unit detects one
of the load signals below....

Power Steering oil pressure SW
Air conditioner/Heater SW
Headlamp SW
Rear defogger SW
Radiator fan SW

Shift to "P" position....again nothing said for SE 5sp

Make sure that inspection lamps on control unit are displaying code
#44....no fault code

If you have a bad fusible link, fix that and clean up your battery
connection. But removing the battery cable will erase any codes.

If you don't have the 86 factory service manual, you should try and get one. Ebay has them from time to time, actually there is one now up for bid.

Good Luck

Thanks for the help. I didn't realize, nor did the chilton or haynes manual give me these instructions. I will test it out tommorrow. Now as for the fusible link on the battery cable, I tried to pull it off and ended up breaking some of the harness. Looks like I got to do some searching. Maybe Shucks has them. My question is, can I just replace the connector for the positive cable, or should I replace the entire cable? I'm thinking of replacing the cable, but I with all the other wires running off of it, I'm kind of doubtful.

BTW, max88q, you should make this a sticky, or stick in the FAQ for others to see if they ever run into this issue.
