your exparences with airfilters (the good ones)

ok i'm thinkin i might want alittle more "gas mileage" (power) out of my car and the simplest way of doing that seems to be changing the air filter...

so from your guy's experences whats the best/easiest to use air filter to replace the stock?....ephasis on both best and easiest

Easiest is to get a K&N filter, part number 33-2010. I think they call it a panel or drop-in filter.

K&N filter is the way to go. They allow the engine to breathe easier, giving you performance and gas economy gains. (Though not through the roof kick you in the *** performance).

well i want to get rid of the stock box and intake from the driverside front fender because the intake really gets in my way when i'm working on the body....i want to hack that thing out with a knife and burn it its soo irritating...

so i guess instead of just saying filter i should have said new intake thats the easiest...i'm not looking for much in the way of power either...just a bit

You can get a cone adapter off of ebay.

Or just build your own, I did mine in about 2 hours, you can either run it straight off of the TB and run it out into the wheel well like I did (inbetween the metal and the plastic shielding) or you can swap the plenum from almost any pre 90's 300zx and run the intake across the front of the engine to get some really good air. Gonna cost a few extra bucks for the plenum but looks nice as an add on though..and you get a little bit bigger throttlebody..I think, well you can try it.

I butchered mine

I had a k&n drop-in filter in my air box, but then my brother had an old cone K&N filter off his '91 300ZX TT and we drilled holes in the filter so it would mount up to the stock MAFS alright. There was a definate fuel economy increase from the standard air filter to the K&N Drop in, and there's a very noticeable 'whoosh' when I stomp the pedal with the new cone. If you're wondering what it looks like, I have some pictures... I'll resize them so they're not fsking huge. Hold on...here we go
from the front of the car close up from the side top-down

These were a day or so after I put it in. Since then I've removed the rubber piping part and stuffed a rag in the intake hole. It was only allowing all kinds of road debris into my engine compartment. I was gonna put the stock airbox lid back in there, but it just looked rediculous, so I just plugged the hole. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do with it? Anyway, been getting better gas mileage with the cone filter on the highway. Used to get about 300 to the tank driving home from college (~250miles home with w/ quarter of a tank left or so and then driving around town would get me to the end of the tank) and now I get around 300 with still a quarter of a tank left. Though, it might also have to do with my new exhaust as well (2"+ from the cat back), but it had started gotten better before I got the new exhaust. Hehe tho for the trip home to get the exhaust put on, after the exhaust pipe had burst itself free from my muffler on my drive home from a party in NoVa for the 4th of July, I got like 230-240 to half a tank and it was REALLY loud. it was awesome. The tone was such that it rumbled my dash at 45-55, well actually, the whole car. good times.

I just noticed that it currently says its 3:26am, but its really 3:10am. My computer clock is adjusted using an atomic clock server. Weird.. 15 minutes off..

your cars got little differences about it...the plate across the top (the v6 3000) is all metal clolored not red at all and your valve colors are shiny and mine are textured...thats strange...it looks like you have adjustable suspension though (lucky)

any way...you just poped the box out and stuck that on there?
looks easy but i would want to go all the way to the old opening where i'll rip out that old intake tube and position the cone as close to or poking through the fender wall part way

edit:

whats thatn tube for resting ontop of the cone thats not connectied to any thing on that side (could that be why stuffs gettin in your engine?)

I had to replace my valve cover gaskets a little while ago (have pictures of my hood off somewhere), and while I had it off, my brother decided to glass-blast the plenum. It was all chipping and nasty looking in the red paint. I dont have the adjustable suspension though.. was shot when I bought the car, and was gonna cost something rediculous like $700 a piece to replace. Just have normal shocks in there now. I didnt just pop out the box and throw the cone in there. Had to pull out the MAFS and drill holes in the cone so it would match up and then tap the holes so screws would thread. I could have done the whole dryer tube thing, but it was more than I wanted to do at the time. The tube resting on top is part of the recirculation system. It is normally on the underside of the airbox (there's a small tube lip it attaches to), it takes any excess exhaust/air and throws it back through the air filter or something (or thats what I was told). The stuff getting in my engine was coming in through the standard airbox's intake piping. Even if some of the mess was coming from that pipe, it wouldnt contain sand and bugs If I was gonna run any kind of piping for the cone, I would probably run it down between the engine block and the cooling fans and not through the fender. Least amount of damage done to the engine compartment (practically zero). Also, its a pretty beefy cone filter. It may look like its sitting in there alright, but it is infact sitting on the wheel well, and was almost too big to fit in there.

Actually, that little tube is the the AIV. It works reverse of what Greg explained. That actually sends secondary air from the airbox into the exhaust stream to help with emissions. The thing Greg explain is more of what the EGR valve does. One thing about the AIV valve is when it fails, if tends to let the condensation in the exhaust flow back into the airbox, and that would usually cause your MAF sensor the fail.

Greg, I like that pop-charger you got....looks like the one JWT sells for the 4th gen.

well damn.. should I be concerned about that hose then? I just kinda moved it under the intake. When I was told it brought air back to the box, I decided to put it under the intake so it would go right back through the filter. Hope it doesnt mean that I'm allowing road debris into my exhaust

And the pop charger is straight off a Z32 the bolt holes on the intake are such that, if I remember correctly, the bolts on the short side of the MAF will line up, but the other side falls a half inch too short or something like that. so its like this:

*......*
*......*
but our cars' MAFS bolt holes are like this

*....*
*....*

as everyone probably knows. The hole for the air to pass through was the same size though. So all we had to do was line it up, then hammer a notch for the bolt holes via the MAFS and then drill 'em out. Was a real pain keeping the shavings from the drill out of the filter, as well as getting out what fell in. Sometime in the future I'll recharge it and maybe it will work even better, who knows.

You shouldn't worry too much about that hose....but if you want to play it safe, you can buy a breather filter and put it on the end of the hose. To realize you would have to kinda work it in, but it works.
