Hi I have a 1985 NON SE Maxima auto with around 114k. I have a few questions about some nagging problems.

1.Initial Acceleration from a stop has a slight lag in it, I normally run 89 octane in it, but when gas was really expensive last summer and i put 87 in it for a while and it ran horrible with that in it(I also had a huge whole in my muffler at the time). Could this be fuel injectors, or could a tune up fix this. I have had it for 10k and have not had a tuneup not including air filter and oil changes. It accelerates fine if it is already moving, maybe it's a low rpm thing.

2. At speeds between 55-65 especially at 65 every once in a while(I think it occurs more often with OD on), and I step on the gas to go faster it hesitates also a few times before it speeds up instead of speeding up smoothly. I don't have my car here at school, but I think that the accelerator pedal would also pulsate when it was hesitating.

3. I have had two incidences with the sunroof refusing to close, it opens without a problem. The last time i used it it took approx 10 seconds for it to decide to close. I know sunroofs are expensive, but what part could this be?, the motor perhaps, and how much would it cost?

4. My Mom's car got hit by a stupid plow truck backing up, so she borrowed my car for a while, but she accidently broke my stock volume **** on the radio. I superglued it back on for now. I have a DIN Pioneer Tape Deck from my old car. Would that install with a lot of hassle?, because the stock deck has the tapedeck plus the equalizer and clock below it.

5. I know it has a 4 wheel independent suspension, but a friend noticed that the shocks or struts were pretty bad. I forgot which ones he said.
Which ones do I have, and what would be an approximate cost to repair those?

Thanks for your help,

David

I have an 89 w/ 204K on it. My first guess would be general tune-up items, especially the Oxygen sensor (the sensitivity to octane is a clue) and the fuel filter. BTW, I've never had the injectors cleaned and they work fine. There may be a transmission problem.

It sounds like you bought the car used. Look at the fan belts. If they looked cracked, there's a good chance it needs a timing belt. Expensive but necissary.

The sunroof may need some good lubrication.

Try to be optimistic. It seems with Maximas, the expensive sounding symptoms have inexpensive fixes.
