dieing at idle

I went out to crank up my 87 SE for work...it started up fine so I went in to get a few more things...when I came back out the car was not running...so I cranked it up again, and it cranked right up, then started to idle really low and died again....so I cranked it up one more time and drove it to work...it ran fine on the way to work....I am wondering if anyone else has had any problems like this? It was about 45 degrees here this morning. Thanks.

Yeah I had that problem with mine when the fuel pressure regulator went bad. This may be the same problem with yours, could be something else tho.

Did you get a trouble code off the ecu when the FPR went dead?

I never check the ECU I was getting a bad whinning from the fuel pump and a very rough idel and sometimes it would die.that I know of there is no code for it but I may be wrong.

I am getting a whining too...but I am thinking it is the altanator...after I rev it a few times it will die down...I think its just trying to build its power

What does your ALT gauge tell you when this is happening?

If it's low (around 12V) then comes up, you might be right
that it's your alt, but if it's higher and stays higher, then it's
something else.

Maybe it's something as simple as changing the fuel filter?

My 86 wagon does this sometimes after I've been driving the
car for awhile then shut it off and go to start it again... it will
run rough for a couple of seconds then smooth out.

I already replaced the regulator and it helped some, but I'm
begining to think I have a leaky injector.

yeah I can try the fuel filter...I just went out and cranked the car again....and my idle will fluctuate from about 600(almost cutting off) to about 1000, and the idle is more rough when I first start it but it is still a little rough even after it is warm....and it is still making that farting noise out of the tail pipe...but its coming from in the engine bay becuase you feel the car kinda jump in the front when you here it from the tail pipe....any help...and how hard is it to do the air regulator fix that is in the sticky? And does it work?

Definately worth a try. Though the IAC is known as a FICD (fast idle control device) on this car. It's located on the back of the intake plenum on the passenger side of the motor when your looking from the front of the car back. I don't believe you will get a code for it since there isn't a sensor for it. As I was telling you last night, you may need to play around with it. Vacuum lines are definately worth checking out. Either way, keep us posted how it goes.

1000-1200 when warming u on a cold day isn't too excessive...more than that, and I'd worry a tad...

Yeah I am not worried about the idle when warming up....it stays at 1200 even after it is warm...it may drop to 1000 every once in a while....could this be another problem associated with the air regulator?

if the air reg is failed in the open position, yes, it could. In this situatin, it essentially creates an intake leak, which can cause a fast idle...

Well my 87 is ideling high (I think) when mine gets up to temp it idles around 1200...I am thinking thats too high for a warm engine...but I ordered the air regulator yesterday so I will let you know if that helps anything.
