My car is stuck in reverse?
'88 5 speed is stuck in reverse? It was working fine 30 seconds before it got stuck, what the hell. I reversed it then went into first and then reversed it again and when I tryed to pull it out it, it was suck and I cant get it out. One thing I noticed is the the support rod for the shifter had a bolt missing so I was thinking the coupling got bound or something? My uncle said it could be the throw out bearing but I dunno? Any one ever had this happen?

Hmmm is this on the tranny you just rebuilt or are still rebuilding? A throw out bearing is possible, but usually if a tranny is locked in gear, the car is in motion and the clutch is engaged. The car would still want to move in reverse even with your foot on the ground. Still possible, but I don't think it'll cause your problem. I would think that it's more of a shift linkage binding somewhere, albeit internal or external. On the 4th gen auto to 5-speed conversion, we had a problem with the tranny being locked into neutral before we put the tranny in the car. Turned out one of the shift forks had moved during shipping and got engaged in gear and it binded up the rest of the shifting assembly.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Its not my transmission, it is one out of a car I want to buy for parts. It was working fine, then he got stuck in the snow and got it stuck in reverse he said. Its making a funny burning smell too when its running, like burning metal? I think it was the clutch, but im not sure

All I can say is, VG33ER crank and pistons.
You'll up the displacement 3.3liters, and lower the compression a little for boost.
With a S/C your good for about 210hp and maybe 230 tq at the crank with 8 psi or so. With turbo 8psi....maybe 225-230hp and 240tq at the crank. ![Big Grin](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Yeah, its the crank from the Xtrerra/Frontier, from what I seen, the block is the same, bores are the same, but the stroke is a little longer on the VG33ER. Also the ER has the dished pistons with the lower compression. Probably the same 8.1 cr compared the stock 9.1 the VG30E has. If you want to do higher boost like you mentioned, the dished pistons and lower cr is a must.

Well she runs. I am still a little weary about the transmission. I dunno, I have ran into so much trouble that I dont want to start celebrating yet. One thing I just noticed is that neither of my radiator fans are running until the thermostat turns them on. From what I understand one of them should be running all of the time right? Other than that I would say that everything is peachy keen *so far*. No leaks to speak of yet, idles a little rough but it seems like it was doing that before. One thing that I did notice is that the new clutch makes noise when I engage it. I dont remember it doing this before. Kind of a quiet thud and a rubbing sound. I am thinking it is just because everything down there is new and it needs to be broken in a little?
Anyway, later.
Anyway, later.

Well, my fans remain off unless the engine temperature is to a certain point, then they turn on. Mine are pretty noisey especially if both are on.
As for the rubbing or thud noise....it could be some play in the clutch pedal, or you could have some mounts that are loose or going bad. I'd look into em.
