Here's another question about my 1985 Maxima. For the last couple of days, it has been acting very strange. It is basically stalling at any speed (even in park). I can be cruising along on the highway, and watch my tach go from 2000 to 0 and back to 2000 again in a second. The car jerks violently when it does this. It is stalling, and running again. When it does this at slower speeds, it will just die. I originally assumed it must be a lack of spark, so I checked the plugs, wires, coil, and distributor. All seems fine. I did find a bad connection at the battery, but have since fixed that (I think).

Any suggestions?

I had this problem.....you'll need to check a few things. First check the codes on the ECU and see if your pulling a code for the CAS. If it shows code 44, check the fusible link for the ECU/EFI Relay. It's located on the positive battery cable along with the Aux Fan fusible link. Make sure the wire isn't just plain falling apart. If it looks like it is, replace the link.

Crank Angle Sensor. Basically its in the distributor that consists of a metal disc with a lot of slits in it. On the top of it is an LED, and below it is an optical pickup. Basically this provides the timing pulse used to fire the injectors as well as igntion timing.

Ahh yes. I did not check that yet. Is this EFI relay located close to the possitive battery cable? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but I have been playing around with that possitive battery connection for a couple of days, thinking there may be a break in the wires somewhere near there. If this relay is located close by, that may be my culprit. It makes a clicking sound when it stalls during an idle. Every time it clicks, it starts to die. I thought it sounded like a relay, and started to check the manual for some sort of relay that controls power to the coil.

If you look between the headlight and battery, you'll see a relay box. Just pop it off and use reference to see which relay is what. I'd check codes on the ECU, as well as fusible links. I thought mine was bad, but it tested fine...and it turned out to be the fusible link.

Sounds like his timing belt is breaking and then instantly repairing itself. I'd look into that.
