87 se helppp

I bought my 87 five speed about a month ago.

Often, for the first minute or so after starting it will run rough(?) like Ill have the gas pedal down and its at 3000 rps, then suddenly drops to 500 rpms and dies or almost dies , then goes back to normal, etc... I could swear theres kind of a hissing/sucking noise when this happens but hard to tell. It runs allright after warming up but sometimes kind of surges on acceleration.

I read the Haynes manual, its throwing a code 13(cylinder head temp sensor)

I put a new fuel filter on and am thinking about trying the air regulator repair.

Sorry about the newbie question but any help would be great

I also have this same problem with my 87, and I too throw the same code (CHTS). The only thing is, I had mine replace when I did the timing belt about 10k ago. I don't have the answer for you but I do have the same problem. Often times in our cars the Air regulator valve goes bad and that will cause the car to have rough starts when it is cold. There is a repair you can do to the valve to fix it, and I think that link is in the stickies. Its called and AAV(Auxiliary Air Valve) or a air regulator valve, its the same thing.

the thing is, I have had the same problem starting the car when the engine is still warm...so I wouldnt think its the air regulator. does yours do it when its warm too?

well, I just took the air regulator out, and the valve/hole/whatever isnt open at all even though its cold.
So Im assuming thats at least part of the problem, but Im not sure if the air regulator fix on this forum will help. I may just start drilling holes/poking screws in and see how that goes...

just completed the air regulator repair off that sticky. I have it set to idle at 1200 rpms, which feels a little wierd, but so far it has started right up.

Great DIY though! really simple fix. I guess Ill just have to wait and see if that fixed the prob or not...

its supposed to be partially open to let more air through when cold, then slowly closes as the engine heats up. mine was jammed closed though.

WTF. when I bought my Max, the top and bottom screws were broken off in the manifold. There were two small C-clamps where the screws should have been. The valve that was there really sucked when cold and idled up to 1500 rpm's when warm. So I removed that setup, got used valve(and screws), removed broken screws, did fix on used valve and car loves to start when cold or warm.
