oi its back...
oi its back...
ok for a long time i never noticed it after changing pumps and thermostats and sensors and such but its back...the pinging....sounds like there are rocks in my cylinders.
i thought it was the chts, then the aav and the vaccum system but still.
i'm down to ignition and EGR circuit.
first off what do you guys think about the pinging?
seccondly, what kind of MSD ignition components will work on a car like this?

Whoa, you say rocks? I think it's time to whip out the compression testor. What I'd be worried about now is how severe the pinging is, because if it's very severe, and you say it seems like there are rocks in the cylinders...I'd be inclined to wonder if you've gone real lean, started detonating bad, and have piston damage because of it. A compression test would be a good start. Also try to examine the spark plugs...they might show a good indication if you've been leaning out.

not like a whole quarry of rocks just a mild pinging, underload going up a hill but instead of being warmed up like it used to be it does it at any temp.
compressions tests were at about where they should be, did that a few months ago to check other things out after doing all that work.
on the straight and level it just goes, steady even.
i forgot about fuel system too, i replaced the filter a year ago, time to change it again but it didnt help back then, been thinkin about a new pump if i take the rear seats out to get them re-upholstered

Mine Does that it sounds like there is one rock in there , Like a clicking noise , I got a tuneup and New sparkplugs , And a compression test for 450 total at midas , And i dont hear it any more , Whew once i got this done my car felt almost like a tuner! a nice one.

no i know what that sounds like and its a different sound, new plugs hmm...i put new plugs in it before the timing belt broke, the wires havent ever been changed, so i guess i'll go for some wires, and plugs are cheap so i'll change them at the same time
Another thing to try is a higher grade fuel. Might be an out there chance, but low octane can cause a little detonation in some cars even when they don't call for it in the owner's manual. My 300zx did that under load on 87 octane and 89 and up fixed it.
