I just got my first Maxima last week. A 1987. I dont know what model it is. It needs some mech work. (both outer CV joints, steering rack, or just new boots and seals, and of course, the infamous water pump I'm currently doing).
I picked it up for $750 up here in Quebec, Canada.
It runs great and everything seems to work. Even all the digital stuff on the dash.
Here's the problem. The Voice is in french. I dont speak french! Is it possible to change it to english?
Anyone? Its more distracting than anything else. And what is she saying anyway? I didn't leave my lights on.
Any feedback on what model I might have would be great.
It seems like a great car. I should have looked at Maxima's sooner!

The big difference seems to be if the car is automatic or manual. If you have a manual you probably have and SE, you will also have the adjustable shocks. Your grill and trim around the windows will be black. Typically the GXE's came with and automatic and chrome around the windows, and grill.

I have no idea on the French speaking warning... I will look in my chilton's book tonight, to see if it gives any clues.

more info on model

I forgot to mention that its an automatic. It has a button on the shifter for overdrive. The trim on the windows and grill is black, and the keyless entry trim is black also.(Any info on how to change the entry code would be great) But the handles are chrome. Valour(sp?) interior is the same color as the paint. Is this a strange combo?
A friend of mine said it is a brougham model. Is there such an animal?

I think there was a broughm model... not sure though...
The main code for the keyless entry is in the trunk, the module is located between the speakers. The process is listed in the regular manual, if you have one. I can't remember all the steps, but I think it is:

press start button
enter the main code found in the trunk
you should hear a long beep.
enter in your personal code
should beep again to accept the code.

I beleive this is the process... Mine is an 85, so it might be slightly different.

voice

I looked at the Chilton's manual, it does not even mention the voice system at all. I am not sure where the box is located. I know it was located under the dash on the drivers side in the 82 maxima I use to have.

sorry I could not be of any help.

Re: voice

In the Haynes man it says that it's under the center console right behind the parking brake lever. Changeing it tho, I dont know...maybe its as simple as changeing the box itself. Hmmmm.
Thanks for your input.
