Has anyone seen the new issue of Car and Driver?

Members of the staff participate in a beater race/scavenger hunt from their offices in Ann Arbor, MI to Redondo Beach, CA ~2400 miles.

All the entries were diesel cars <$1500.

1980 Mercedes 300SD

1982 Olds Delta 88 Royale Brougham

1983 Datsun Maxima FTW!!

It took the longest (route and elapsed time) to the finish but came in 2nd overall. The car had 235,704 miles and after a once over and tune up made the journey. They're now going to auction off the cars used on ebay.

My friends and I were talking about entering something similar, its about half that distance and on the east coast. You can only spend $250 or under on the car . There are awards for the most rust and most miles hitch hiked We still may do it

Hey that's cool to see that a Maxima diesel was in the race and finished 2nd. With 235,704 miles on it that's better than what you'd think for the LD28 engine. Was it automatic or 5-speed manual? Always good to hear of another diesel driving around.

That's a good running car. It's on ebay today for those who are near Torrance, California.

Right from the Auction:

Pretty soon it will be removed by eBay and I thought it
would be nice to save it for future generations.

Vehicle Description

Car and Driver 1983 Datsun Maxima Diesel not Ferrari 250 Lusso, Lamborghini Miura SV, Bugatti Royale, Buick Regal, Borgward Isabella. VIN JS1VP52A612107642 And so it came to pass that Car and Driver magazine's 1983 Datsun Maxima Diesel, having journeyed 2400 miles and 42 hours across this Great Nation, bearing its burdens without once refusing to start and conducting itself at all times with unstinting reliability and fairly astouding economy, all the while supplying its long suffering crew some modest (very modest) epicurean comforts, like heat, was dumped on eBay. At 225,000 miles, she ain't getting any younger. A few loose ball joints, a few loose screws, a few missing interior thingamajigs. Some wobbly bits, some groaning bits, some bits that go "dug-a-lug-lug-ping!" Reliable power from a diesel 2.6103478112 liter inline-six. Returned 28 mpg with three corn-fed Mid-westerners aboard, rising to 32 mpg after purchase of inflatable party sheep. New thermostat, new cigarette lighter, new pack of Hustler playing cards. Recent complete service, including new belts, hoses, air snorkel, wind sock, rabbit's foot. Service performed by Nissan North America shortly before the company announced that it was leaving California. Possible work on the brakes. Fairly certain that an attempt was made to pry off "Datsun by Nissan" badges. Re-packed the wheel bearings. All new filters. Four speed automatic does reverse extremely well. Good transport for, well, people who can't afford anything better. Good transport for people who like to save fuel. Good transport for live snakes and other livestock. Good transport for documentarians making films about good transport. Most of the car is located in Torrance, California. Will deliver to anywhere in Torrance. Is available for viewing in Torrance. Be from Torrance or passing through Torrance if you're planning to bid. Leave Torrance immediately after purchasing. Payment accepted by PayPal, or just send cash. It's all a big lie; nobody ever opens your envelope.
