I placed an ad in the classifieds.

I mean, if it doesn't sell, I'm obviously keeping it, and will continue to maintain it and enjoy it. I'm pretty flexible on the price, but if I don't get somewhere close to asking, then I won't be selling it. I'm not desperate to sell. If I still have it by summer, I'll replace the suspension in it, and I should have a 300ZX ecu by then, too.

I sold mine last week, and I deeply regret it. It was my favorite car when I was like 5 and 6. Finally bought one when I was 21. At least I can say I had one.
I will own another 2nd Gen SE one day. But with a 5 Speed. =)

I'm entertaining thoughts of freshening up my suspension with new KYB's, ST springs, new mounts etc. Then bolting up a set of 5zigen 17x8" wheels that came off a friends 240SX. I have too many projects and toys already, so I really should leave the Maxima alone.
I would say your first step is get a spare tranny, then open up the intake and exhaust, replace tranny, then turbo, rebuild old tranny so you have a spare....
The basic mod list for sure will work, and yes you can grab a 5 spd pretty easy, hope you can find a 5 spd 85-88 to swap over all the pedals, shifters, etc! The exhaust is the second concern I still believe the 3rd G exhaust manifolds and ypipe would work on a 2nd G....The intake is system is restrictive as hell and that Mod will help out alot, there are camshafts available, and ECU reprograming is available from JWT as well, turbo isn't an option for me....but lots of guys do it!
So I would be able to either use any 2nd gen maxima or 3rd gen maxima transmission to convert it? And I wanna turbo the **** outta it... what transmisson would you guys preffer to convert my 87 maxima to 5spd and that will also be good with turbo
Just joined you all...:)
Hello everyone,
I am now the proud owner of a 1985 Maxima wagon that I bought last Monday!!! The family that I bought it from had it for like 25 years and it's been very well maintained, and it has 107,000 miles on it. It's silver and it's a talker, with an automatic transmission because I live in San Francisco...
Now if it can just pass the California smog test tomorrow I can actually register it in my name. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
I am very happy to be a part of your wonderful forum, I have already learned a whole lot by reading through the threads here, thank you so much!!!

Good low mileage find
Just a heads-up on passing your smog test. On older cars the catalytic converter needs to heat up to work its magic. Many forums suggest driving the car hard (30 minutes on the highway, hills, etc) and then take it in for the test. Last smog I did all that, drove in right away, had the test preformed and sadly failed. After checking different things I finally took the car in again for a retest. Same place same technician but this time he ran my car at very high rpm for what seemed like 10 minutes before doing the actual test. The car passed with lots of room to spare.
Having to paying almost $50 on smog test for pre-95 cars, make sure you have the technician (light-up) your car’s catalytic converter before the test is preformed. That's what the technician told me. (guess he couldn't the last time)
Hope this helps,
Al

2nd Generation for sale in Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX. 202K, 5spd transmission, not perfect, but very well taken care of. Posted on craigslist, but not many buyers who appreciate older Maxima's. I'm the second owner of this vehicle and moving out of state and will not have room for second car; that is the only reason I'm selling it, love to keep it.

^^Definitely well taken care of Bluefly.
If I were closer & wasn't saving up for awd (NY), I would actually jump on this.
May also want to put in Maxima For Sale thread to get better hits.
GL with sale.

i have a 1988 Maxima. 180,000 miles. it was meticulously, almost obsessively kept up and serviced by the original owner/friend, who loved it. He sold it to me at 150,000. It is white and it is such a good car. driver's side leather a bit crapped out. funky gold color alloy wheels, i guess it was some sort of executive model. It is my main car. i just had the alternator replaced..it was the original alternator which finally gave out. also i replaced the idler pulley for the A/C and the alternator, as the bearing started making noise..
Right now I have a PS fluid leak..it hasn't been much, but I think it is increasing. replaced the pressure hose 2 years ago. I have to figure out whether it is a hose or the pump or the rack. Dealer quoted over $800 on the rack, so I need to double check with my regular mechanic....and it IS time for a set of new tires...so I need to figure out whether to put possibly $1200 into her and bet that this sweet old Maxima has another 20,000-40,000 miles or whether it is time to try and move on...
For those of you who have stuck with your Max's...do they live this long? this one seems to ,and looks and runs beautifully....

@AZ... I check autotrader.com once or twice a month and most of the 2nd gens I've seen for sale the past several years have had 200-250+K on them. The engines are virtually bulletproof provided you keep up on oil and timing belt changes. That said, at two and a half decades old, you're going to be looking at age related items and probably the odd electrical glitch.
My '87 wagon is the 4th Maxi I've owned over the last 15 years and is right up there with my old '91 GXE as my favorite cars I've owned (I admit I have a thing for a handful of 80s and 90s cars). The only thing that will make mine economically feasible to keep is if I do the work on it myself...it needs too much at the moment (struts and probably some bushings, brakes, t-belt, front seals, water pump) to farm it all out but parts alone are manageable.
You said yours has leather. I think the only SEs with leather, well, suede, were the monochromatic white '88 Shiro versions...of which only a couple hundred were made. All white, including wheels, grille and bumper moldings with brown suede. oem-surplus.com looks like they still have a front butt cushion available.

I have a shell with a title of a 1985 Nissan Maxima. No motor, No Trans, Most of the interior is gone, fenders gone, hood gone, doors gone, Make me an offer. I would hate to see it go to the scrap yard.
