why do you modify the oil sump?
will I have to do that for my 77 280z engine into my 84 max?

where did you mod the wiring harness?
I was planning on using the entire 77 280z engine harness to the 77 280z ECU.
Then mod the dash (gauges) wiring as needed.
Is there something I'm not fore seeing?

the maxima uses a front sump oil pan while Z cars had rear sump so in order for it to clear you either need to mod your oil pickup like i did or take the engine to a machine shop and have them tap/drill the holes for the front sump oil pickup and block off the other one. if your gonna go and get it machined do a bit more research cause they need to watch for an oil passage way or somthing when relocating the oil dipstick

you can either use your stock harness, cut it at the ECU plug and wire in the 280z one or you can use the complete harness like i did and wire it in where the stock engine harness plugs into the body harness. first one might be alot easier though

my maxi runs ok now. i didnt have any problem with the guages besides my temp and oil pressure. gotta look into that tomorrow

thanks for the info!

I think I may take your advice on only changing the ECU harness.

And I guess I have to get my oil sump modified.
You said you had your sump flipped and tweaked.
What was the "tweaked" part? Its not just a mirror image of the original sump position?

TRANSMISSION MOUNT: After looking at your picture of original transmission mount-bracket missing the 4th hole on the body, I envision an easy fix. Using a flat piece of 3/8 (or 1/4) steel thats 2" wide and long enough to reach the 2 holes on the body and the 2 hole on the bracket. Sandwich it between the mount-bracket and the body side holes. The adaptor will have 3 holes, as the 1 middle hole will line up to the bracket and body mounting hole. I would use the same material to shim the other side of the bracket, to keep it level. You could weld it to the bracket, but I don't think its necessary.

nah you dont have to do anything to the sump itself. youd have to take the oil pickup and have it rotated so it goes where the front sump oil pickup would go. once you get the two engines out and take the oil pans off it will be more clear what youll have to do.

yeah thats what i was thinking too. i just dont have the materials or tools to do that in my garage right now lol

I would install a high capacity 280zx Turbo oil pump while you're at it!

L28 into my 84 maxima

I ended up drilling the block, to mount the maxima's oil pick up. I felt better about the fitment (and I don't weld). I used a small magnet to remove the shavings. Flushing with brake cleaner doesn't do much.

Tomorrow I will run the hydraulic line, for the clutch. Then I will be installing the engine and manual trans. It better not rain!
