1982 Datsun/Nissan Maxima diesel - $1500 (McMinnville)

One of the last daily driven diesel Maximas around, many have given up their engines to other applications 'cause that's what lasts on these things. This one has been in my family all it's 30 years. Purchased new in Medford and cared for meticulously for most of its life this example has 180,000 miles and runs great. I put new glow plugs and a NAPA battery in last year and she starts right up most every time. Once in a while she'll want to be cranked a bit but has not failed to start in the year I've been driving her.

Most of the accessories work, still. The A/C is all there but the front drive pulley is off the engine, so no A/C at this time. The right rear pax door will not open, I'm not sure why. All the windows roll up and down. The AM/FM radio with retracting antenna works most of the time, the cassette player tried to eat the tape I put in so I haven't given it a second chance. The heater/defroster, now that I replaced the thermostat, works great. The interior needs real help. The sun has wreaked havoc on the cloth upholstery and vinyl dash, but the headliner is on great shape. The carpet is stained but all there and intact. The center console lid is broken and missing but that could be replaced with something home made. The clock/trip odometer/stop watch, etc. work and keep time. All the lights work except for the charging system idiot light. The rear window leaks and the backseat and trunk stays wet in the rainy weather.

Automatic shifting the transmission does all its supposed to. The parking brake is disconnected. The rear shock struts on the independent rear suspension are giving up after 30 years. The 4-wheel disc brakes will need attention, sooner or later. The japanese (not the GM) power steering pump for the rack and pinion steering gear is getting tired and cranky, but still works. The wheels are Enki 15 inch rarities, but need the center caps. Tires have about 1/3 tread, have plenty of grip but make lots of noise. Muffler system is in great shape. Look at the photos and see what you think. I've come to love this Jalopniky vehicle and am quite proud of its diesel noise and smoke. She does about 23 mpg around town, with 26 about the highest I've seen - I should change out the fuel filter as that's what the included service manual says to do next.

Call me for any other details and to make me an offer if you are interested. Don't waste my time as I've done my homework and can only be a little flexible. But I'll try, especially if I think you are respecting this vehicle for the value it retains.

That's the second diesel Max for sale in the Portland Craigslist in the past month. They're not super rare in Hipsterland.

I own one of these. Was getting about 38 to 42 mpg with offload diesel. Car has some rust spots but still cranks. Thinking about adding a turbo and putting a 4x4 suspension underneath it. It would definitely be a one of a kind!!
