air flow meter?
air flow meter?
For those of you that have had an air flow meter go bad, how did it happen? Was the car running good and then started to run bad or did you just start the car up and it was messed up. Yesterday, when i went to work the car was fine but when i went to leave it would barely run. It did not rain or anything so i know it did not get wet. I scanned the computer and got a code 12 which is "air flow meter circuit open or shorted." I've checked all the connections to make sure everything was good. The cheapest price I can find on one is about $300. Anybody have any suggestions?

My AFM went bad about a month and a half ago. It was running good and then all of a sudden it started running like sh*t, while I was driving. The car wouldn't rev past 2000 rpm (which is how you know it's the AFM, because the computer has that as a preset value since it doesn't know how much air is going into the engine). The thing that caused my AFM to bad was the Air Injection Valve. There's a hose coming from it that attaches to the side of the airbox. For some reason it started putting water in my airbox which got sucked into the AFM and destroyed it. If I were you, I would open up the airbox to see if there's any water in there, and if so, disconnect that AIV hose. It really doesn't make a difference in how the car runs, if anything, I think it runs better without it. As for pricing, I got mine for $115 at a local junkyard. That's pretty much the going rate for them, you may even be able to get it cheaper. Don't waste $300 for a brand new one, a used one should last you a very long time as long as you disconnect the AIV hose. http://www.car-part.com has a large database of junkyards and parts that they have, so you could find a cheap one, call up the junkyard that has it and have them ship it out to you.
