T/C Lockup Shudder

Hi a friend of mine has a 1991 with the VE motor. His auto ia making a weird sound at the moment. When he accelerates and the lockup turns off there is a quite big shudder as it comes out. It doesnt do it when he floors it though. Any suggestions. He drives around with OD on as well.
Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

Could be one of the clutches inside the auto or the lock-up torque conveter not disengaging. Could be something simple as a sensor. Does it do it when hot, cold or anywhere inbetween?

Has the auto been serviced since it has been in NZ?

Brent.

I am the friend with the 91 VE,
it does it mainly when its warmed up, and it is very noticable, feels like you're going over a series of bumps in the road. The car hasn't had the tranny serviced since its been imported, and has done about 117k

You've got bigger problems if you have a 91 VE.

yep, its a VE, first registered in dec. '91 which is first when the VE came out so i've been told. I usually just say its a '92 to save confusion.

Could be the temp sensor for the auto. Sometimes the connections get corroded but can be easily cleaned.

There are a couple of good auto places in Chch. You could try Cockram Nissan but they are pretty pricey. Auto Automatics in Clarence street are really good. Free inspection / diagnostic and about $175 for a complete flush and adjustment.

It could also be that the bands need adjusting and fluids changed. Try the link that Davis4005 posted first, then move on from there.

Happy hunting.

I tried the diagnostic, got 10 short flashes, so i'm guessing everything is fine there. will take it to auto automatics and get it looked at. probably couldn't hurt to get it flushed anyway seeing as it hasn't been done, and i've already put 20k on the clock in 6 months!

You'll be surprised at the difference. New fluid and some adjustments can do wonders. Hope it goes well.

damn!

well, i took the car to auto automatics for a service, and they rang back to say that there was metal shavings in the bottom when they took the pan off, so now the tranny's coming out to diagnose the problem, here's hoping it's not major!

Could be just a clogged solenoid then if there is shavings in there. All the best.

This is where mechanical insurances are good. I wish I had one when my 89 Se crapped itself.

PS, chchmax - no more peas and beans for me. It went through today

tranny

turns out that the drive plates are chipped or broken and need to be replaced, and the plates in the torque converter were off balance, so its all getting replaced, but yay for mechanical warranty, cause its getting done for free!
