ECU reset procedure

Anyone know the ECU reset procedure? ****, anyone know the procedure for getting trouble codes and the like? I can't spring for a FSM for my 92SE...

I don't think it's that simple... perhaps there is a capacitive discharge that keeps the memory alive? I see no change in anything by simply unplugging the battery for an extended period.

you don't need an FSM to find out how to get the trouble codes, get a Haynes manual from the local auto store only $12.

and to reset the ECU you unplug the negative cable, its like that on most cars.

The proper way to do it it to undo the kick panel on the rear of the passanger's side of the consule. behind there is a silver box. That is the ECU. There should be a sticker over the screw that allows you to access the codes and reset the ecu. There is a little diagram for which way you have to turn it to get what you want. I don't remember off the top of my head since it's been a year. Turn the car off and turn the screw to the proper direction. Turn the key to the on position and they check engine light will start to flash. The codes are listed in the forum somewhere so do a search to find them. Then turn the key off again. Return the screw to the normal position. Then start the car. If the problem is fixed, the check engine light will go off. This is much better than just removing the battery cable since you won't lose all of you memory settings....IE radio..etc.

The ECU is pretty smart. If you unplug the negative terminal for at least 24HRS, then you can be sure the ECU has re-set itself. Now when you plug it back in, you don't see a difference? The ECU is smart, but not a genius (not yet anyway). It needs to learn. Take your car out for a drive on some nice open road without lights. Accelerate and decelerate and so on. This is how the ECU learns the cars behavior, such as new intake..exhaust..things like that. After that the ECU will continue to learn for at least 40 keystarts, then its become a genius and doesn't have anything else to learn.
